LOS ANGELES — The San Francisco State women's volleyball team dropped Friday's CCAA match at Cal State LA, 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 18-25, 25-21).
Set one was a back-and-forth contest that was indicative of the entire match. Tied 22-22, Cal State LA (11-9/7-5 CCAA) took the early lead with the final three points of the set, which all came on Golden Eagles kills.
"We were right there in every single set. Between games two and three, we talked about making the extra play that makes a difference that maybe gets you on a run. When you lose 25-22, 25-23 in the first two sets, there's a ton of plays where you could say, 'what if we made the extra effort,'" said San Francisco State Head Coach
Matt Hoffman. "In the third set we made those extra plays but in the fourth set we just made too many errors, but we were still right there."
The Gators (7-14/3-10 CCAA) led the second set 6-3 before the Golden Eagles tied the set at 7-7. Tied 10-10, CSULA mounted a 4-1 run. The Gators pulled to within a point, 18-17 but Cal State LA called timeout and regrouped with the next three points for a 21-17 lead. Daisia Labrie's kill sent the Golden Eagles into intermission with the 2-0 lead.
SF State turned an 8-7 deficit in set three into an 11-8 lead. From there, the Gators built it to 14-10, forcing Cal State LA to call timeout. Another four-point run grew the lead to to 16-10, then to 22-14.
Abby Griffith's kill finished it off and made it a 2-1 deficit.
Cal State LA jumped out to a 4-1 lead in set four and the Gators never recovered from the early deficit.
Drew Morris led the Gators with 13 kills.
Bailey Johnson and
