TURLOCK, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's volleyball team secured the season sweep of Stanislaus State with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) win on Tuesday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.
"We spent a lot of time in practice yesterday working on individual skills and I was really glad to see the girls carry that over into tonight's match," said SF State Head Coach
Matt Hoffman. "We served well, passed great, played great defense, and played really clean with our attacks."
Tied 9-9 in the first set, SF State (6-9/2-5 CCAA) rattled off six consecutive points for a 15-10 lead. That was enough to secure an early lead.
Stanislaus State (0-15/0-7 CCAA) held an 18-14 lead in set two but the Gators took care of consecutive errors, and a
Lauren Williams kill pulled SF State within a point, 18-17. Setter
Eden Fukushima snuck a kill at the net, then
Christine Johnson and
Lauren Williams sent back a Rachel Klopfer attack to tie the set at 19-19. Johnson and Williams blocked another attack and a Warriors attack error saw the SF State lead suddenly stand at 21-19.
Bailey Johnson's kill a few points later sent the Gators into the locker room with the 2-0 lead.
"I was really pleased with the execution of the scouting report and there were a few times when it got a little close and we didn't get rattled," added Hoffman. "We just played through to the next point."
SF State jumped out to a 4-1 lead in se three and never relinquished the lead. The Gators used a four-point run to grow the lead to 20-13, though the Warriors responded with a 7-1 run that cut the lead to 21-20. Back-to-back Warriors errors gave a bit of breathing room again and a
Drew Morris service ace finished things off.
The Gators head to Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, Oct. 6 and to Cal State East Bay on Saturday, Oct. 7. SF State returns home on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. for Dig A Cure Night vs. Humboldt State.
