VB | Gators swept by Cal State Monterey Bay

SEASIDE, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-20) at Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night in CCAA action.

"Every one of those sets they went on a run with one server and we never did enough to fully recover all those points. Whenever you get yourself down against a team who fought as hard as they did, it's tough to come back," said SF State Head Coach Matt Hoffman. "We had times we fought real hard and played real well but we just got ourselves in a hole in each one of those sets. We didn't make a lot of errors but those runs made it too hard for us to come back."

Cal State Monterey Bay (10-5/4-3 CCAA) strung together several small runs, which prevented SF State (6-10/2-6 CCAA) from ever finding a rhythm. In set one, there was no particular turning point. A three-point run gave the Otters some breathing room at 11-7, though the Gators pulled within two. Another three-point run grew the lead to 15-10 and faced set point at 24-18. SF State went on a five point run to pull to within 24-23 but a ball handling error gave the Otters the early advantage.

The Gators led 11-10 in set two but the Otters went on an eight-point run and took an 18-11 lead. That momentum carried into set three, where the Otters started on a 5-0 run and built the lead to 10-2. The Gators trailed by 10 and trimmed the deficit to three, only to see the Otters inch closer until they earned match point on an Amber Tygart kill.

Tygart and Maddy Underwood each led the Otters with 12 kills apiece. Brenna Dougherty, Bailey Johnson, and Christine Johnson all had eight kills apiece for the Gators. Drew Morris added seven kills and 12 digs in the loss. Freshman libero Jocelyn Rodriguez had a team-high 13 digs and Dougherty added a dozen digs. Setter Eden Fukushima dished out 32 assists and had six digs, as did defensive specialist Vanessa Ditz.

The Gators will look to bounce back on Saturday, Oct. 7 when they head to Hayward for a 7 p.m. match at Cal State East Bay (9-5/3-3 CCAA).
