SAN FRANCISCO — Despite new career marks for several players, the San Francisco State women's volleyball team's losing streak extended to four on Friday with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 25-13) home loss to Cal State East Bay.
"They were pretty great tonight. It wasn't for anything of our lacking. We dug balls but they had 42 percent kills and 10 percent errors. they flat out beat us," said SF State Head Coach
Matt Hoffman. "I was proud of us for batting back in that third set. Down 2-0, we came out really hot but we couldn't sustain it in the fourth set. I like the way we're competing. We just have to keep with the process and trust that it's going to continue to get better."
Drew Morris led the Gators (7-16/3-12 CCAA) with 16 kills and 15 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Vanessa Ditz, who saw action at libero in the third and fourth sets, recorded a career-high 18 digs and Cassandra Fong dished out a career-high 43 assists. The Gators dug 47 percent of the attacks that they faced but the Pioneers (15-9/8-7 CCAA) were locked in on and hit a season-high .345.
The Gators led 10-6 in set one but a six-point Pioneers run saw the lead flip to 12-10. A Ditz service ace tied the set at 16-16 but a 5-1 Pioneers run made it 21-17. Four kills, two each from Deja Thompson and Lindsey Ray, closed out the set and saw the Gators trailing 2-0.
SF State came out of intermission with more focused. Vanessa Ditz served up the first five points, in which Olivia Tabron had three kills. Cal State East Bay rallied and tied the set at 13-13 and surged ahead, 18-16. The Gators tied the set at 19-19 thanks to kills from Christine Johnson and Bailey Johnson. The Gators took the set on another Bailey Johnson kill and a Danielle Ryan service ace.
In set four, Cal State East Bay used a three-point run to stretch a small lead to 9-4. The Gators trailed by seven when the Pioneers rattled off five consecutive points and despite back-to-back kills from Morris and Tabron, the Pioneers tallied the final three points of the set.
Bailey Johnson added 12 kills and Christine Johnson added 10 kills in the loss. Abby Griffith recorded three of the Gators' eight block assists.
Ray led all players with 17 kills for the Pioneers and made 13 digs for a double-double. Brandi Brucato led all players with 21 digs and was one of four Pioneers in double digits. Thompson added 12 kills and four block assists. Katie Ireland dished out 44 assists.
The Gators will celebrate Senior Night on Saturday, Nov. 4 versus Cal State Monterey Bay (11-12/5-10 CCAA). First serve is slated for 7 p.m. with a pregame ceremony honoring the team's lone senior, four-year letter winner Christine Johnson.
