SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's wrestling team dropped a close 20-19 decision to Menlo on Senior Night.
After falling behind early, SF State (5-11) rallied back but Menlo, the No. 3-ranked team in the NAIA, pulled away late.
Joshua Villaflor fell to Steele Escobedo, the fifth-ranked wrestler in the NAIA, 11-2 in the opening 141 bout.
Dylan Furtado jumped out to a 10-1 lead and finished off Jeffrey Uyesaka by technical fall, 17-2. In the 157 bout,
Trevor Perez and Thomas Hamamjy traded points early but Perez controlled the final minute of the first round en route to a 12-3 lead. He went on to record a technical fall as well, 20-5. With senior
Tyson Kuahine sitting out the match due to injury,
Romeo Medina got the nod at 165. He grabbed an early 6-1 lead over Erik Stockwell and held on for a 7-4 decision. At 174,
Jesse Lyga came back to tie his bout with Isaac Rangel 2-2 by the end of the first round but Rangel scored the next five points and Lyga fell by a slight 8-7 decision.
At 184,
Mitchell Owens and Jovan Villalobos were tied 1-1 through the first two rounds but Villalobos pulled away for a 7-2 victory to put the Oaks within striking distance. Young Woo An's 10-3 decision over
Johnathon Costa in the 197 match tied the dual score at 13-13, then Javier Gonzalez, ranked No. 4 in his weight class in the NAIA, put the Oaks back in the lead, 17-13, with a 17-6 major decision over
Ricardo Jaramillo.In the 125 weight class,
Matt Gamble, who saw his 13-match win streak snapped last week, suffered his second consecutive defeat in an 11-4 decision to Troy Lakin.
Nathan Cervantez pinned Blaysen Terukina in the second round but that left the Gators a point short.
