ARCATA, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21) decision at Humboldt State on Saturday in CCAA play.
The Gators (4-8/0-4 CCAA) got off to a slow start on Saturday and saw their losing streak hit five. HSU (2-8/1-3 CCAA) rattled off a 7-0 run that helped secure set one. Set two was much tighter and featured eight kills. Set two was tied 9-9 but five errors over the next seven points gave HSU a 15-10 lead and forced the Gators to call timeout. SF State climbed back to tie it 20-20 on a
Vanessa Ditz service ace but HSU pulled away for the early 2-0 advantage.
SF State jumped out to a 10-6 lead and fended off a late HSU surge that saw the lead dwindle to 23-22. A
Brenna Dougherty kill and a bad HSU set forced a fourth set.
Set four was tied 13-13 but a service error proved costly and gave Humboldt State some momentum that the Lumberjacks stretched into a four-point run. That separation was just enough, as SF State pulled within a point at 22-21 but was unable to recover.
SF State middle blocker
Abby Griffith matched a career-high with her team-high 12 kills. Fellow middle blocker
Bailey Johnson added 11 kills and outside hitter
Brenna Dougherty added 10 in the loss. Outside hitters
Christine Johnson and
Olivia Tabron had six and five kills, respectively. Setter
Cassandra Fong dished out a career-high 41 assists. Freshman libero
Jocelyn Rodriguez had 21 digs.
"We had a good game plan going into the match and I liked our match ups. I thought we did a great job getting our middles the ball which was something we knew we wanted to do, but we were outscored on the pins," said SF State Head Coach
Matt Hoffman. "We lost serve and pass game and anytime you make more errors and lose that part of the game, you're in for a long night."
Lauren Reid led all players with 20 kills on .390 hitting for HSU, followed by 11 from Janelle Ayala. Sarah Shively led all players with 23 digs.
SF State will look to get back on track when the Gators host Stanislaus State (0-12/0-4 CCAA) on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at sfstategators.com. In-game updates will be available on Twitter at @sfstate_wvb.
