CARSON, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's basketball team topped Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night with a 69-61 victory at the Torodome.
With the victory, the Gators (9-7/6-5 CCAA) avenged an earlier-season double overtime loss to the Toros (8-10/5-6 CCAA). SF State moves ahead of CSUDH and into a fifth-place tie with Stanislaus State (11-6/6-5 CCAA).
CSUDH took a five-point lead early in the second half but an 18-2 run swung the game into the Gators' favor.
Ryne Williams, who scored a team-high 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting, began the run with an assist to
Warren Jackson, then followed with a tip-in of his own. Malcom Johnson ended the 9-0 run but
Tyler Jackson's three-point play kicked off another 9-0 run. Back-to-back layups from Williams with 8:30 to go gave the Gators their largest lead of the night, 57-42. A 17-5 Toros run shaved the deficit all the way to three with under two minutes to go but
Chiefy Ugbaja found
Warren Jackson in the corner, who nailed the clutch three. A literal mistep by the Toros on an inbounds with 44.8 seconds remaining gave the ball back to the Gators and
Warren Jackson iced the game with a pair of free throws.
"Our post players really stepped up on both ends of the court for us in the second half tonight," said Head Coach
Vince Inglima. "When we are rotating and communicating at a high level, we are a very tough team to score on."
SF State started the game on a 6-0 run but the Toros answered with a 10-0 run. CSUDH finished the half on a 7-0 run and led 32-28 at halftime.
"In the first half, we weren't moving the ball well, and therefore didn't get great looks," said Inglima. "Cal State Dominguez Hills is a strong defensive team. Later on, we shared it better and were able to spread them out to open up attacking lanes."
Jonathan Nichols led all players with 21 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Johnson, coming off of CCAA Player of the Week honors, added 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds in the loss.
Warren Jackson added 16 points and eight rebounds with team-highs of three three-pointers, three assists, and three steals. Zeller added a dozen points and
Tyler Jackson was efficient with nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and matched a career-high nine rebounds.
Jase Wickliffe added eight points and a career-high eight rebounds.
