LA JOLLA, California - For the second-straight year, the No. 12 San Francisco State women's track & field team are the CCAA Champions after scoring 182 points over the weekend.
"I am very happy for the women on this team, especially the seniors who had such high expectations this year," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Tom Lyons. "We watched our women exceed season and earn lifetime best marks all weekend long. It's rare when a team can perform like ours did, but it's a tribute to the ladies who, throughout this season, became unified as a team and were unbeatable today."
It is the third CCAA Championship in school history for SF State with women's soccer earning the first title in 2010. In addition to the team title, SF State took home a handful of individual awards. Monisha Lewis earned the CCAA High Point award after scoring 23 points. Courtney Massengale was named the Field Athlete of the Meet after earning All-CCAA honors in shot put, discus, and javelin to account for 26 points. Alexis Henry was tabbed the Track Athlete of the Meet after winning the 200m, 400m and leading the way in the 4x100 and 4x400. Lyons earned the Coach of the Year award, which is the third-straight time a Gator coach has taken home the hardware. SF State has earned the High Point and Field Athlete of the Meet award in back-to-back seasons, and this is the first Track Athlete of the Meet award since 2014.
Destiny Mack-Talalemotu kicked off the day with another gold for SF State as she won hammer with a toss of 56.10m. The senior makes it back-to-back All-CCAA honors in the event to earn ten more points for the Gators.
The 4x100 of Alexis Henry, Kennedy Hardemion, Maya Cook and Jazmine Smith defended its title with a time of 45.29, which is the second-fastest time in program history and in the nation. SF State has now earned All-CCAA honors in the event for three-straight seasons.
Diani Ellis earned five more points in the 3000m steeplechase with a fourth-place finish. The junior ran an 11:13.79, which is just off of her personal best of 11:11.75.
In triple jump, heptathlon champion Devanique Brown took second with an 11.79m which she got on her fifth attempt, to accumulate eight more points on the day. Jazzlyn Matthews took fifth with a personal-best 11.25m.
Monisha Lewis also defended her title in the 100m hurdles as she clocked in at 13.45, which is the second-fastest time in the nation. Devanique Brown took seventh with a time of 14.80 while Valencia Fortenberry followed its a 15.01m.
It was a Purple and Gold sweep in the 400m as Henry, Hardemion and Smith all podiumed to tally 24 more points. Henry ran a personal-best 53.83 which is a CCAA Championships and program record while Hardemion clocked in at a personal-best 54.39 and Smith a 54.61.
Bibiana Enriquez ran a 2:16.30 in the 800m for five more points as SF State pulled away with the title. Lewis recorded a personal-best 59.69 in the 400m hurdles to tie the program record that was set in 2014.
Henry, Smith and Cook helped seal the championship in the 200m, with Henry taking first with a time of 23.66 and Smith following with a 24.10, both of which are personal bests and provisional marks. Cook ran a 24.56 to earn 22 more points.
Over in shot put, Mack-Talalemotu made it back-to-back golds in shot put as she threw a 15.30m to improve her provisional mark. Massengale earned bronze with a toss of 14.10m to give SF State 16 points in the event.
Wrapping up the weekend was the 4x400 of Alexis, Kennedy, Maya and Jazmine, and the quartet made it look easy as they took gold with a time of 3:43.08 to give the Gators the 4x400 title three-straight seasons.
