SAN FRANCISCO - Brylynn Vallejos and Emily Mitchell of the San Francisco State softball team have been named to the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) All-West Region Team, the organization announced. Vallejos earned First Team honors while Mitchell was named to the Second Team.
Vallejos is one of the top players in the country this season, ranking third in the nation with 95 hits and 17th with a .455 batting average. The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Freshman of the Year is one of two freshmen on the D2CCA All-West Region First Team and one of five CCAA representatives. The Reno, Nevada native was named to the Schutt Sports/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) National Player of the Year Top 25 last month, and was one of just three players in the West Region to be recognized.
Mitchell is tied for first on the team and tied for third in the conference with 17 wins this season, which is also in the top ten all-time in Gator history for wins in a season. The junior has tossed 198.2 innings this season, which is the second most in the CCAA, and struck out 114 to be one of just five pitchers in the conference with triple-digit strikeouts. This past weekend in the CCAA Tournament, Mitchell dominated No. 13 UC San Diego to eliminate the top-seeded Tritons. The Reno, Nevada product didn't allow a Triton hit in the final five innings and retired the last nine batters she faced to seal the shutout win and send the Gators to the semifinals.
The Gators dropped Western Oregon in their NCAA Tournament opener earlier today, and look to do the same against No. 9 Concordia - Irvine tomorrow at 10 a.m. Live stats and a stream will be provided.
Voting for the D2CCA Baseball Teams were conducted by the NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors from West Region institutions and conference offices. The Division II Conference Commissioners Association encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of higher education. The CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact Division II intercollegiate athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities.
