SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco State Head Wrestling Coach Jason Welch has announced what is shaping up to be one of the program's most impactful recruiting classes in recent history. The class is comprised of eight freshmen who will build a foundation for the future and one transfer in Kevin Mulligan, who will bring a veteran presence with Big Ten experience.
"Coach Loder and myself put a lot of time and energy into this class. We believe this is the group that will propel us to the next level. Not only are they talented wrestlers, but they are also great students and solid characters," said Welch. "It's going to be an amazing journey supporting and coaching them as they strive towards national championships and grow into young adults."
A six-foot-two freshman, the 197-lb.
Callum Bisping attended Canyon High School and has earned CIF and Greco state championships. The Anaheim native is a two-time California state placer and a two-time state qualifier. He also earned fifth place at SS Masters and was a Freakshow medalist.
Tyee Ducharme is a five-foot-eleven, 174-lb. redshirt freshman. He attended Vacaville High School, where he finished seventh at the CIF State Championships. Ducharme wrestled for Vacaville Wrestling Club and plans to major in Civil Engineering.
A six-foot, 197-lb. redshirt freshman, Denzel Mabry was a four-time state qualifier for Castlemont High School in Oakland. A two-sport athlete (football), he had a Top 12 finish in state and a Top 3 finish in Freestyle and Greco in state. Mabry will study Business Management and plans to minor in Mechanical Engineering.
A six-foot, 174-lb. freshman, Troy Mantanona hails from Palm Desert, where he attended Palm Desert High School. He recently placed fifth at the 2019 Folkstyle Nationals. He was the 2019 Masters Champion and a four-time qualifier. Mantanona was a perennial CIF qualifier, earning a berth all four years of his prep career. He was the champion in 2017 and a two-time runner-up. Mantanona will study Business at SF State and wrestled club for Coachella Valley Judo & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
As a senior at Los Gatos High School,
Clayton Murabito earned a first-place finish in the SCVAL and third place in CCS. The five-foot-eleven 157-lb. freshman wrestled club with Bay Area Dragons.
Kevin Mulligan, a six-foot-four, 197-lb. redshirt senior, transferred from Rutgers, where he redshirted in 2016-17. Out of high school, Mulligan was ranked the No. 50 overall recruit by Intermat and No. 7 nationally at 195 pounds. Mulligan was a two-time Fargo All-American with fifth and fourth-place finishes. He was a two-time New Jersey high school state champion and three-time placer, a three-time regional champion, and a four-time district champion. He is pursuing a degree in Liberal Arts at SF State.
The five-foot-seven, 157-lb. Redshirt freshman attended Servite High School. The Anaheim native built quite the resumé in 2019. He finished eighth at state, seventh at NHSCA Nationals, and fifth at the Fargo Greco Wrestling Nationals.
A heavyweight, Ramos hails from Folsom and attended Vista Del Lago High School. He earned a third-place finish at the 2019 CIF State Championships, was runner-up at SJS Masters, was champion at Las Vegas Freakshow Varsity, and had a Top 12 finish at Fargo Junior Greco Championships. A two-time San Joaquin sectional champ, he was also a Western Regionals Triple Crown winner in 2017. Ramos wrestled club for El Dorado Hills Wrestling Club.
Ruffinelli had a dominant senior season at Las Lomas High School. The five-foot-eight, 141-lb. Grappler posted a 37-7 record and was a state qualifier. Rufinelli, who was born in Paraguay, plans to major in computer science.
