SB | Castro, Vallejos Selected to 2020 CCAA Softball All-Star Team

SAN FRANCISCO — With the COVID-19 pandemic suspending and subsequently ending the 2019-20 college athletics season in mid-March, it became an impossibility to properly bestow all-conference honors for spring sports. As a result, the CCAA is pleased to announce the CCAA All-Star Teams, a fun effort to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments across the league during the abbreviated 2020 campaign. San Francisco State was represented by sophomore outfielder Brylynn Vallejos and senior infielder Michelle Castro.

The list of 20 student-athletes named to the CCAA All-Star Team mirrors the dugout limit for CCAA softball, and is not bound by specific positions around the diamond. All 11 programs were guaranteed one representative to showcase talent across the league. These standout performers were submitted for consideration by the league's softball sports information contacts, with additional nominees listed, by school.

There was no sophomore slump for Vallejos, a sophomore from Reno, Nevada, who was last season's CCAA Freshman of the Year and NFCA Second Team All-American. This season, the center fielder led the CCAA with a .424 batting average, 36 hits, and 26 runs. She led the CCAA with 28 stolen bases and was second in the nation. Her 18 walks and pair of triples ranked third in the conference, while her .612 slugging percentage ranked fifth.

A two-time CCAA selection, Castro was second in the CCAA behind Vallejos with 18 stolen bases and now has 88 career stolen bases, which is a new program record for the Gators. The Acampo, California native led the CCAA with 10 doubles and was second with 32 hits and 22 runs scored. Her .390 batting average was tied for seventh, boosting her career average to .336, which is fifth in program history.

Andrea Hildan and Katie Rohrer were also nominated for the team. Hildan had a .326 batting average and appeared in 18 of the Gators' 27 games. A 2018 All-CCAA Second Team selection and 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team selection, Hildan finishes with a .343 career batting average, which ranks fourth all-time in program history. Hildan's .367 batting average as a freshman ranks tied for eighth highest in a single season. Her 66 hits that season are tied for seventh. Rohrer, the Gators' lone four-year letter winner on the 2020 roster, has appeared in 131 games in the purple and gold and has started all but one game this season. She batted a career-best .310 this season and is a career .285 hitter. Rohrer is tied for fifth all-time in program history with 631 putouts.

Humboldt State's Evelyn Andrews was named the 2020 CCAA Softball All-Star Team's honorary captain. The redshirt freshman tragically passed away in February following a courageous battle with cancer. Andrews became a source of strength, inspiration and courage to each team across the league, showing truly and in Evelyn's own words, no one fights alone. The Gators honored Andrews by hanging her jersey number up in the dugout their first series after her passing and wore ribbons the remainder of the season.
