Chico, Calif.--- Chico State avenged an earlier season loss to the visiting SF State Gators with a 2-0 victory this afternoon in Chico, California. The Gators defeated the Wildcats 2-1 in overtime earlier this season in San Francisco. Chico State (11-4, 7-4 CCAA) is currently fourth in the NCAA Division II West Region and second in the CCAA North Division, two points behind division leader Sonoma State.
“We keep digging ourselves a hole,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “In this league, you need to show up ready to play each and every match,” added Hunter. “Give Chico credit, they pounded at us all afternoon and picked up three points.”
Chico State took a 1-0 lead at the 17:02 mark of the game, when Zac Crim connected on a header off a throw-in from Adam Raish for his eighth goal of the season.
SF State (7-8-2, 4-7-1 CCAA) had a couple of chances to tie the game midway through the second half, but Michael Keohane preserved the shutout with the saves. Kyle Crain connected on a penalty kick to double the Wildcat advantage at the 78:33 mark.
The game remained 1-0 Wildcats until the 78th minute, as Kyle Crain connected on a penalty kick to give Chico State a 2-0 lead.
Chico State out shot the Gators 20-7 including 14-2 in the first half while Keohane had four saves in goal for the Wildcats. The Gators did recorded four shots on goal while SF State's
Israel Cisneros (Watsonville, California, Hartnell College) had six saves in goal.
SF State will finish off its home part the Gators' home schedule with a pair of CCAA matches at Cox Stadium next weekend. The Gators will host Humboldt State on Friday at 12:30pm and then on Sunday, SF State will host Sonoma State at 2pm in its home finale. Sonoma State defeated Humboldt State 5-0 this afternoon in Arcata. The Gators lost 2-1 at Sonoma State on September 19 and also 2-1 at Humboldt State on September 21.
Before the match, the Gators will recognize both teams' seniors including their own
Jake Beverlin (Sacramento, California, Consumnes River College)and
Israel Cisneros. The Gators will play their final regular season match on October 29 at Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, California, at 3pm.
