San Francisco, Calif..--- SF State men's soccer team snapped their two-game losing streak this afternoon with a 2-0 win over the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks (7-6-4, 2-6-3 CCAA) at SF State's Cox Stadium. With the win, the Gators (8-8-2, 5-7-1 CCAA) recorded their fifth shutout of the season and improved to 5-2-2 at home and 4-2-1 in conference matches at home.
“Our players did everything we asked of them this afternoon,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “Any team can win at this level if you do everything right and today we did that as a team,” added Hunter. “It was a good win for us today, but we have our work cut out for us in our final two matches.”
SF State scored its first goal when
Sergio Villalva (Chula Vista, California, Otay Ranch HS) connected for his third goal of the season off a ball from
Mario Hernandez (Whittier, California, California) in the 27
th minute of the first half.
Spencer Schwandt (Napa, California, Viintage)increased the Gators' lead to 2-0, when he connected on a ball from
Dylan Glass (Rancho Cucamonga, California, Alta Loma)and
Charles Conway (Albuquerque, New Mexico, University of New Mexico)at the 60:22 mark. This was
Schwandt's fourth goal of the season.
Israel Cisneros (Watsonville, California, Hartnell College) had one save in goal for SF State en route to his fourth shutout. Drew Ryan had five saves in goal for the Lumberjacks. SF State out shot its visitors 18-7 including 8-2 in the first half.
SF State returns home for the final time this Sunday, October 26 at 2pm, when the Gators host #13 Sonoma State University at Cox Stadium. Before the game, SF State will recognize both teams' seniors including their own
Jake Beverlin and
Israel Cisneros.
