San Francisco, Calif.---- The 13th ranked Sonoma State University Seawolves (15-2-2, 9-1-2 CCAA) took an early 2-0 lead and held on for a 2-1 win over the SF State Gators in Senior Day at Cox Stadium on the campus of SF State. SF State falls to 8-9-2 overall and 5-8-1 in the CAA and finished its home part of the schedule with a 5-3-2 record.
“Today's game was very entertaining for the fans,” said SF State Head Men's Soccer Coach Joe Hunter. “You can't give a good team like Sonoma State an early 2-0 lead,” added Hunter. “We played too tight at the beginning, but give Sonoma State credit as they are a very good team.”
Nathan Medina put the Seawolves, who are second in the NCAA Division II West Region, the early 1-0 lead, when he connected for his seventh goal of the season off a ball from Eric Lafon. The Seawolves scored again in the 23rd minute as Andrew Bailey connected on a ball from Cam Vickers to give Sonoma State a 2-0 lead.
SF State cut the Seawolf lead in half, when
Spencer Schwandt (Napa, California, Vintage) connected on a penalty kick in the 25
th minute. This was his fifth goal of the season, which ties him for the team lead with
Antonio Ugarte (Danville, Calforna, San Ramon Valley ). The Gators had several chances including a header by
Sergio Villalva (Chula Vista, California, Otay Ranch HS) off a corner kick by
Wes Whitt (Alpine, California, Cathedral Catholic)in the final two minutes, but it went high and Sonoma State held on for the 2-1 road win over SF State.
Sonoma State out-shot the Gators 18-8 while
Israel Israel Cisneros (Watsonville, California, Hartnell College) had six saves I goal for SF State. Brook Johnson had two saves in goal for the Seawolves.
The Gators will end their 2008 regular season this Wednesday, October 29
th at 3pm with a non-conference game at Notre Dame de Namur, who is currently fourth in the NCAA Division II West Region, in Belmont, Calif.
