SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State women's volleyball team won its second straight match on Friday night, posting a decisive three-set victory over Cal State Stanislaus (25-15, 25-16, 25-13) at the Main Gymnasium.
The Gators registered their second-best team hitting percentage of the season (.405) to raise their record to 13-15 overall and 6-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Meanwhile with the loss the Warriors drop to 6-23 on the year and 3-16 in the CCAA.
“Our team had a great week of practice and it showed tonight in the match, said SF State head coach Michelle Patton. “I'm very proud of our entire team effort and feel good about our improvement over the course of the season so far.”
The two teams battled throughout the first half of the opening set, with neither side owning more than a two-point advantage. However, the Gators eventually gained control, breaking a 12-12 deadlock with a 13-3 flurry to close out the frame.
SF State fell behind by a 4-1 count early on in the second frame before seizing the momentum once again. The Gators rebounded to tie the score at 8-8 and then went up for good after a kill by freshman Kyle Lamet (Benicia, California, Carondelet HS), sparking a 17-8 run.
Possessing a 2-0 advantage in sets, SF State wasted no time in putting the match away. With the score knotted at 2-2, junior Beth Perkins (Woodland, California, Mt. Hood CC) ignited another sizeable run with a kill and service ace as the Gators quickly built an insurmountable 17-7 lead.
Perkins just missed out on a double-double with nine kills and nine digs, as did freshman Lisa Morgan (La Quinta, California, La Quinta HS), who finished with nine kills of her own and 10 digs. Meanwhile Lamet hit .421 on the evening with a match-high 10 kills to go along with eight digs. Junior Sloane Williams (Henderson, Nev., Coronado HS) also impressed, hitting at a .750 clip on six kills with no errors. Fueling the SF State offense was freshman Mary Maiocco (Bakersfield, California, Bakersfield HS)who handed out 35 assists.
The Gators will wrap their regular-season schedule on Saturday when they tangle with Chico State as part of Senior Night festivities. The senior players from both teams will be recognized prior to the 7 p.m. start, including SF State's Laura Deely (San Francisco, California, St. Ignatius College Prep) and Anne Heggli (Cool, California, Bear River).
