Gators 4-0 For First Time in School History

Alex Thomas Scored 15 Points and Had the Game-Winner in SF State's 71-67 Win over Concordia (Minn.)
Seaside, Calif.--- Since SF State men's  basketball team went to a full collegiate schedule, the Gators have never started a season 4-0.  The 2008-09 Gators made history this evening in Seaside as they came back with 11 seconds to go to defeat the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears (1-3) 71-67.  SF State was down 67-66, when Alex Thomas (Vallejo, California, Dominican University) drove the lane and hit a jumper to give the Gators the 68-67 lead.  Robert Hayes (San Diego, California, St. Augustine's) finished the scoring for the Gators after recording a steal and connecting on an old-fashioned three-point play to make the final 71-67 SF State.
“We played 35 solid minutes and then stepped up and made plays when we needed them,”said SF State Head Men's Basketball Coach Bill Treseler.  “Ryan Wessels (Napa, California, Napa Valley College) gave us a good shot in the arm,” added Treseler.  “It was great to get into a tough spot and survive, tomorrow we will have to play 40 minutes at a high level against an outstanding Seattle Pacific team.”
SF State jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game and increased its lead to 17-8 with 11:56 to go in the first stanza.  The Golden Bears cut the Gator lead to four as they went on a 6-1 run with 8:13 to go, but SF State finished the half outscoring Concordia-St. Paul 16-10 to take a 34-24 lead into the locker room.
The Gators kept their ten-point lead until Concordia-St. Paul went on a 5-0 run to cut it to 43-38 with 13:15 to go on a Quentin Barfield lay-up.  SF State outscored the Golden Bears 17-10 in the next seven minutes to increase its lead to 12 (60-48) with 5:17 left on the clock.
Concordia-St. Paul then went on a 19-6 run to take its first lead of the game 67-66 with 45 seconds left in regulation on a Sammy Ricks lay-up.  The Gators then called a time-out  with 15 seconds to go, when Thomas drove the lane and hit what proved the game-winner.  Hayes finished the deal with his steal and an old-fashioned three-point play.
Thomas paced the Gators with 15 points while Will Logan (Apple Valley, California, Apple Valley) added 13 points. Hayes chipped in 12 points and four assists and Ryan Wessels had 10 points off the bench for SF State. Craig Heiman led the Golden Bears with 15 points.

The Gators out-rebounded Concordia-St. Paul 34-26 with Brad Visman (Placerville, California, UC Riverside) leading the way with seven.  They shot 47% from the field and 73% from the charity stripe.  SF State will return to the court tomorrow evening for a 5:30pm tip-off with Seattle Pacific in the Second Round of the Otter Classic in Seaside.
