San Rafael, Calif.--- SF State' Dylan Glass (Rancho Cucamonga, California)scored two of the Gators' three goals in their 3-2 overtime season opening win in San Rafael against the hosts, Dominican University Penguins (0-1). Glass recorded the golden goal off a throw-in from Charles Conway (Albuquerque, New Mexico, University of New Mexico) with less than four minutes left in the second overtime period.
“It was a hard fought victory in both team's season opener,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “We had to work hard to take the 2-1 lead in the second half and showed perseverance to win this afternoon's game,” added Hunter. “Dominican played well and it was a great learning experience for our team,” noted Hunter. “We have a week now to get ready for our next two games out east.”
The Penguins took a 1-0 lead off a goal by Ryan Vella with 19:00 minutes left in the first half off a corner kick by Matt Peinado. The Gators' Charles Conway tied the game at 1-1, three minutes into the second half off a free kick from 25-yards out by Wes Whitt (Alpine, California).
SF State took the lead 20 minutes later as Glass connected on his first goal of the match off a ball off the post by Ali Elkandi. The Penguins would not go away as Vella connected on his second goal of the match to tie the game at 2-2 with less than a minute to go.
The first overtime went scoreless, but the Gators came through with less than four minutes to go when Glass recorded the golden goal off a throw in from Conway. SF State (1-0) is off until Friday, September 5th, when the Gators face Briarcliffe University (NY) in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
