San Francisco, Calif.--- In both team's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener, it was the visiting UC San Diego Tritons (4-0, 1-0 CCAA) defeating the SF State Gators 1-0 at Cox Stadium on the campus of SF State.
The Tritons scored at the 63:12 mark of the second half when Tom Caplan connected on his first goal of the season off a ball from Tony Fernandez. SF State had a couple of shots to tie the score in the final minutes, but Peter Akman denied them as the Triton goalkeeper recorded six saves in goal en route to the shutout.
“Welcome to the CCAA,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “It was a hard fought match and UC San Diego got one more goal than us,” added Hunter. “The Tritons were just a little bit more organized than us and we could not get behind them.”
The Gators out shot UC San Diego 11-8 including 9-5 in the second half. Israel Cisneros (Watsonville, California, Hartnell College)recorded one save in goal for SF State, while Spencer Schwandt (Napa, California) and Wes Whitt (Alpine, California, Cathedral Catholic)each had two shots on goal for the Gators, who will return home this Sunday at 11:30am when they host Cal State Dominguez Hills, who is seventh in the nation.
