No. 10 Seawolves Withstand Second Half Surge by Gators

Sergio Villalva Recorded His First Goal as a Gator

Rohnert Park, Calif.--- The 10th ranked Sonoma State Seawolves (7-1, 2-0 CCAA) withstood a strong second half surge from the visiting SF State Gators this afternoon in their 2-1 victory at Seawolf Field in Rohnert Park.  The Gators (2-4-1, 0-3 CCAA) will look to snap their losing streak at three this Sunday afternoon at 2pm, when they face the Humboldt State Lumberjacks in another CCAA match in Arcata.

“Our second half was better this afternoon,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter.  “We feel like we can build on the way we played in the second half this Sunday against Humboldt State,” added Hunter.  “Two mistakes led to Sonoma State's goals and we need to iron those out while doing a better job of tracking.”

Ben Langwith scored the game's first goal off a cross from Eric Lafon in the 16th minute to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead.  The game remained 1-0 Sonoma State until the 64th minute, when Andrew Bailey connected on a header in the box.  The Gators made it a game as Sergio Villalva (Chula Vista, California, Otay Ranch HS) connected on his first goal off a free kick from Charles Conway (Albuquerque, New Mexico, University of New Mexico)in the 73rd minute.

Israel Cisneros

Sonoma State held the Gators to just that one goal in the final 17 minutes to take the 2-1 victory.  The Seawolves out shot the Gators 14-4 while Taylor Jones had just one save in goal for Sonoma State.  Israel Cisneros (Watsonville, California, Hartnell College) recorded five saves in goal for the Gators.
