Arcata, Calif.--- Humboldt State's Josh Suggs connected on a loose ball off the foot of Ronald Demombynes with less than seven minutes left in the match to give the Lumberjacks a 2-1 win over the visiting SF State Gators (2-5-1, 0-4 CCAA) this afternoon in Arcata, California. The win improves Humboldt State's record to 4-1-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the CCAA.
“The guys put everything they had into the game this afternoon, unfortunately Humboldt State connected for the game-winner on a bang-bang play which the Lumberjacks got behind us and scored,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “Sergio (Villalva) and Jeffrey (Wiant) played well for us today, we just need to do a better job of managing the game.”
The game was scoreless until the 11th minute when Demombynes connected on a ball from Matt Colwell and Lyke Menk to give Humboldt State an early 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 Humboldt State, until the 73:50 mark when SF State's Spencer Schwandt (Napa, California, Viintage)scored his first goal of the season off a ball from Charles Conway (Albuquerque, New Mexico, University of New Mexico) to tie the game at 1-1.
SF State out shot the Lumberjacks 18-12 including 10-7 in the second half and also recorded more shots on goal than Humboldt State 5-2. Dylan Glass (Rancho Cucamonga, California, Alta Loma) had four of the Gators' 18 shots while Sergio Villalva (Chula Vista, California, Otay Ranch HS) had three including two shots on goal.
Drew Ryan had had four saves in goal for Humboldt State while Israel Cisneros (Watsonville, California, Hartnell College) was in goal for the Gators. SF State returns home this Friday, September 26 at 1:30pm for a CCAA match with No. 17 Chico State. This is the Gators' third opponent they have faced that is ranked in the top 20 in the nation.
