San Francisco, Calif.---- San Francisco State's men's soccer team snapped No. 17 Chico State's seven-game winning streak this afternoon in a 2-1 overtime win over the visiting Wildcats (7-1, 3-1 CCAA). SF State (3-5-1, 1-4 CCAA) snapped its six-game winless streak and also defeated the Wildcats for the first time since 2004, a 2-1 win at home.
“This was a great one for us, we finally put a complete game together and came out with the 'W',” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “We are a good team, this win does not mean anything unless we get Cal State Stanislaus this Sunday,” added Hunter. “Mario Hernandez's game-winning goal was a very opportunistic goal, which caught Chico State off guard a bit.” “As a team, we made a change with Wes Whitt in the back and Charles Conway in the front and it helped us in the end.”
Chico State took the 1-0 lead, when Kyle Crain connected on a free kick for his third goal of the season. The game remained 1-0 Wildcats until the 77th minute when Antonio Ugarte (Danville, Calforna, San Ramon Valley ) connected on a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1, which was his fourth goal of the season. That sent the game until the extra period, when Mario Hernandez (Whittier, California, California)connected on a ball from Charles Conway (Albuquerque, New Mexico, University of New Mexico) for the game-winner five minutes into the extra session. This was Hernandez's first goal of the season.
The Wildcats outshot the Gators 13-10 while Michael Keohane had one save in goal for Chico State. Israel Cisneros (Watsonville, California, Hartnell College) had three saves in goal for the Gators, who will host Cal State Stanislaus this Sunday at 3pm. The Warriors lost 2-1 at CSU Monterey Bay this afternoon in overtime.
