SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. –
Donisha Tate (Oakland, California, Oakland, Las Posita College) posted her third career double-double to propel the San Francisco State women's basketball team to a 67-60 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game Friday evening at Coussoulis Arena in San Bernardino, Calif. Tate was one of four Gators to reach double figures in scoring, notching a career-high 17 points to go along with a game-best 11 rebounds as SF State improved to 9-7 overall and 3-6 in conference play. Meanwhile with the loss, the Coyotes slip to 7-8 on the season and 5-4 in the CCAA.
“Tonight we were inspired and under control for the full length of the game,” said Gator head coach Joaquin Wallace. “The first five minutes of the second half and the final five minutes, I thought, were especially well-played.”
In addition to Tate's heroics, SF State also received 14 points and career-high nine assists from
Desiree Butler (Lancaster, California, Lancaster, Pasadena City College), while
Dominique Hunter (San Francisco, California, Gateway) and
Jessica Hout-Freeman (Fremont, California, Washington)recorded 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Gators connected on 15 of 25 field goal attempts (60 percent) in the second half, finishing the game at 49.0 percent on 25-for-51 shooting combined, while holding CSUSB to a 37.3 percent pace (25 of 67). SF State also held a 42-32 advantage in rebounding.
The first half was a low-scoring affair as both teams combined for just three field goals in the first 6:20 of the game. SF State held a slim 13-11 edge following a pair of free throws and a layup by Hunter at the 9:49 mark of the opening stanza. However, CSUSB reeled off five unanswered points to go out in front by a 16-13 count with 7:54 remaining.
The Coyotes maintained the upper-hand over the ensuing seven minutes, but SF State kept the host team within sight, keeping the deficit to a manageable four points. Trailing 25-21, the Gators narrowed the gap on a layup by Hout-Freeman at the 1:09 mark. Following a missed Coyote free throw, Butler drained a 3-pointer with one second left on the clock, putting the visitors up, 26-25, heading into the locker room.
SF State maintained the momentum after the break, racing to a 37-29 lead on a Butler layup and foul shot with just 2:41 elapsed. CSUSB would not go quietly, however, as a triple by Jaclyn Rainville capped a 10-2 run to tie the score at 39- 39 with 12:43 remaining.
Three minutes later, a layup by Hout-Freeman gave the Gators a six-point cushion at 49-43 before the Coyotes rallied once again. Shannon Gholar nailed a triple at the 5:57 mark to knot things up at 51-51, but Hout-Freeman answered with a jumper on the ensuing possession, as SF State would start to pull away.
Butler converted a three-point opportunity with 1:08 left in the game, providing the visitors a nine-point cushion at 62-53. Morgan Pryor gave CSUSB life with a 3-pointer on the next trip down the court. However, the Gators drained seven free throws the rest of the way to seal the win.
Gholar totaled 15 points to lead the Coyotes, while Lisa Takata and Koi Brown chipped in 10 points apiece.
Meanwhile, SF State's
Krystle Mays (Long Beach, California, Chatsworth) scored four points to join Angel Floyd (1979-81) as the only two players in school history to post 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 200 steals in a career. Mays has now compiled 1,003 points, 677 rebounds and 215 steals as a Gator.
SF State will look to make it two straight on its weekend trek to Southern California when it travels to Cal Poly Pomona for a CCAA clash on Saturday, Jan. 24, starting at 5:30 p.m.
