SAN FRANCISCO--- It was the visiting CSU San Bernardino Coyotes (11-3, 7-3 CCAA) blanking the SF State Gators 1-0 this afternoon in an overcast day at SF State's Cox Stadium. The Coyotes only needed Danny Rodriguez's goal at the 45:38 mark of the second half to key their CCAA victory over SF State.
“I thought we responded well from Friday's heartbreaking loss to Cal Poly Pomona,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “We just can't give up a soft goal like we did today early in the second half,” added Hunter. “Our team showed good energy today, we just need to finish the season strong as we will still have six games left including five at home.”
The first half saw just one shot on goal attempt which came on Albert Cabrera's attempt in the 25th minute for the Coyotes. The Gators had three shot attempts which were blocked, sailed high, or went wide. The first half ended with the score tied at 0-0.
CSU San Bernardino came out in the second half and scored 38 seconds when Rodriguez connected on a ball from Cabrera that slipped past the Gators'
Eric Scolman (Oceanside, California, Oceanside) to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Coyotes had a chance to double their lead, but Scolman stopped Billy Pellow's shot in the 61
st minute. SF State's first chance to tie the game came in the 85
th minute as Arath DeLaRocha stopped
Wes Whitt (Alpine, California, Cathedral Catholic) shot attempt. Five seconds later,
Spencer Schwandt (Napa, California, Viintage) attempt was blocked by the visitors and then Whitt's attempt sailed high. The Gators last shot attempt was blocked in the 87
th minute as the Coyotes secured the 1-0 victory.
Eric Scolman had two saves in goal for the Gators while Arath DeLaRocha had two saves in goal en route to the shutout for CSU San Bernardino.
The Coyotes out-shot the Gators 14-10, but SF State recorded more shot on goal attempts than its guests (3-2).
SF State (5-6-3, 2-5-3 CCAA) will look to get back on the winning track, when the Gators host Humboldt State this Friday, October 16
th at 12:30pm at Cox Stadium. This is a rematch from when the Gators defeated the Lumberjacks 3-0 in Arcata, Calif., on September 27
