SAN FRANCISCO--- The No. 7 Sonoma State Seawolves (12-2-2, 9-2-1 CCAA) used a strong second half to key their 2-1 conference road victory over the SF State Gators at Cox Stadium in San Francisco. Sonoma State out-shot the Gators 15-2 in the second half including the game-winning goal by Taylor Jones in the 83rd minute.
“It was a good effort by our guys this afternoon after another heartbreaking loss on Friday,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “Sonoma State is a quality squad and give them credit,” added Hunter. “I am pleased with the play of our bench today.”
Trevor Hurst put the Seawolves up 1-0 when he connected off a corner kick by Cam Vickers which then Ryan Hall tapped to Hurst for the game's first goal in the eighth minute of the first half. The Gators came back and tied it the game at 1-1, when
Wes Whitt (Alpine, California, Cathedral Catholic)connected from 15 yards out on a pass from
Spencer Schwandt (Napa, California, Viintage)in the 19
th minute of the game.
The Gators (5-8-3, 2-7-3 CCAA) came back with two shots on goal three minutes later by
Arnol Arceta, but Brook Johnson recorded two of his four saves. SF State had another chance to go ahead, but Johnson stopped
Josh Kuluris' shot in the 35
th minute.
In the second half, the Seawolves came out strong and recorded 15 shots including four shots on goal but
Eric Scolman (Oceanside, California, Oceanside)had four of his game high five saves in goal for the Gators. In the 79
th minute, Ben Langwith's attempt was stopped by Scolman. Then four minutes later, Jones connected on a ball from Ben Langwith which was off a free kick from Stuart Gallent for what proved to be the game-winner.
For the game, Sonoma State out-shot the Gators 23-9 and also recorded 11 corner kicks to the hosts' two.
SF State will return to the pitch this Friday, October 23 for its last road game of the season, when the Gators travel to Seaside, Calif., for a 3pm CCAA match with the Otters of CSU Monterey Bay.
