TURLOCK.--- The Cal State Stanislaus Warriors and SF State Gators battled to a 3-3 double overtime tie this evening before 811 fans at Warrior Field in Turlock. This was the first time in six matches; that the Warriors (6-4-1, 3-4-1 CCAA) had not won on their home field.
“Both teams played really well this evening,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “After Cal State Stanislaus went a man down, we lost our concentration but we battled back after going down 3-2,” added Hunter. “This was a hard fought match and now we have to get ready for Chico State on Sunday.”
The Gators (5-4-2, 2-3-2 CCAA) took the early 1-0 lead in the 27
th minute, when
Arnol Arceta (Bay Point, California, Mt. Diablo ) connected on a cross from
Spencer Schwandt (Napa, California, Viintage) and kicked it in the center of the net. SF State had two chances in the next 15 minutes to double its lead, but Javier Rosales stopped Schwandt's shot and
Antonio Ugarte (Danville, Calforna, San Ramon Valley ) shot sailed high. With a little under four minutes left in the half, Cal State Stanislaus' Jose Velasquez connected on free kick from Nolan Holridge to tie the game at 1-1 going into the locker room at half.
The game remained tied at one until six minutes in the second half and that is when
Arnol Arceta connected on his second goal of the game off a pass from
Dylan Glass (Rancho Cucamonga, California, Alta Loma) to give the Gators a 2-1 lead. This was Glass' seventh assist of the season, which ties him for sixth on SF State's single season assists list; it also places him with 13 in his career (which is fourth on the Gators all-time career assists list).
Cal State Stanislaus had four chances to tie the game at two, but
Eric Scolman (Oceanside, California, Oceanside)saved two of them and the other two sailed high. But at the 72:19 mark of the game, Bladimar Murillo on a pass from Andrew Ruiz and kicked into the right side of the net to tie the game at 2-2 for the Warriors.
Eight minutes later, Cal State Stanislaus took a 3-2 lead as Arturo Pulido connected off a cross from Edgar Santana that deflected off the Gators. The Warriors' Santana had a chance to give the hosts a 4-2 lead two minutes later, but the shot attempt was blocked. With six minutes left in regulation, Arceta came to the rescue again for the Gators as his free kick went to
Sasha Chalak (Concord, California, Acalanes) who connected on the game-tying goal. SF State had two chances to win the game in the final minute, but both shot attempts were blocked by the Warrior defense to send the game into overtime.
The first overtime was dominated by the Warriors as they had three shot attempts that went wide, was blocked, and the last one with three minutes left in the first overtime period was saved the Gators'
Eric Scolman. The Gators came out in the second overtime strong as Arceta's shot in the 100
th minute was saved by Rosales. Cal State Stanislaus had two chances in the next minute, but one was blocked and the other stopped by Scolman. In the final minute, SF State's Schwandt's header sailed wide as the horn sounded to the end the game in a 3-3 tie deadlock.
Cal State Stanislaus out-shot the Gators 25-20, but the Gators had a 9-8 advantage in shot on goal attempts and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Scolman had five saves in goal for SF State while Rosales had six in goal for the Warriors.
The Gators will conclude their season long four-game road trip this Sunday in Chico, California, for a 2pm starting CCAA match with the Chico State Wildcats. Chico State defeated CSU Monterey Bay 3-0 this evening in Chico.
