Villagrana Scores Golden Goal in the Gators' 2-1 Overtime Win Over Cal State Monterey Bay

Edgar Villagrana Connected on the Golden Goal in the Gators' 2-1 OT Win Over the Otters
 
SAN FRANCISCO--- Edgar Villagrana (Pittsburg, California, Pittsburg) connected off a pass from Spencer Schwandt (Napa, California, Viintage)and scored the game-winning goal, 7:22 into the first overtime to give the SF State Gators a 2-1 victory over the visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Otters, who defeated the Gators 3-2 on Friday in Seaside, this afternoon at SF State's Cox Stadium. This was Villagrana's sixth goal of the season and second game-winning goal while Schwandt now has 8 assists.
            “We finally got the monkey off our back,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “Our proud of our guys as they kept our working hard and did not give up,” added Hunter. “The guys that came off the bench were the key to the game today.”
            Freshman Sasha Chalak (Concord, California, Acalanes) connected on the game's first goal as he headed in a corner kick from Spencer Schwandt in front of the goal to give the Gators a 1-0 lead at the 27:10 mark. That was just one of the two shots that SF State (6-9-3, 3-8-3 CCAA) recorded in the first half as the Otters out-shot their hosts 6-2 in the first stanza.

            In the second half, the Gators had their first two chances blocked by Cal State Monterey Bay (5-10-3, 4-7-3 CCAA) in the 55th minute and then Chalak's shot sailed wide in the 61st minute. 
            At the 65:30 mark of the second half, the Otters' Beau Villanueva connected on his first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Villaneuva scored from 20-yards out that slipped past the Gator goalkeeper.
            Max Brixey's attempt to give the visitors the lead at the 65:30 mark was stopped by the Gators' Thomas Comer (Danville, California, San Ramon Valley) at the 67:30 mark. Then seven minutes later, Nate Torricelli's shot attempt was blocked by the Gators. The Otters had one more chance in regulation to take the lead, but Andrew Breault's attempt went wide with two minutes to go in the second half.
            SF State came out strong in the first overtime as they had three shot attempts in the first five minutes, but Brenden Baca stopped two and Edgar Villagrana's attempt went wide. With four minutes left in the first overtime, Torricelli's attempt was stopped by Comer, which was one of his six saves and once again Comer stopped Eric Pratt's attempt 57 seconds later. Then with less than four minute to go in the first overtime, Edgar Villagrana connected on a pass from Schwandt for the golden goal from 20 yards out.

         The Otters out-shot SF State 13-11 for the game, but the Gators recorded more shots in the second half and first overtime (9-7). Cal State Monterey Bay also had more corner kicks, 6-4 than its hosts. Baca had three saves in goal for the Otters.
            SF State will finish its 2009 regular season this coming weekend with two home games. On Friday, the Gators will face Chico State at 12:30pm and then on Sunday at 11:30am, SF State will host Cal State Stanislaus in its regular season home finale.
