SAN FRANCISCO--- The visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos (6-6, 4-5 CCAA) came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the SF State Gators 3-2 in overtime this afternoon at SF State's Cox Stadium. The Gators fall to 5-5-3 overall and 2-4-3 in the CCAA and will return to the pitch this Sunday morning at 11:30am, when they host CSU San Bernardino.
“We came out strong today but fell into a trip of not playing to lose but playing to lose,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “Cal Poly Pomona is a technically sound team and played well this afternoon,” added Hunter. “We worked hard today but not well in the right spot and now we have to respond Sunday against CSU San Bernardino.”
Arnol Arceta (Bay Point, California, Mt. Diablo ) put the Gators on the board connecting on a free kick in the fourth minute. The Gators doubled their advantage when Arceta connected on his sixth goal on another free kick in the 22
nd minute. The game remained 2-0 going into the second half.
Rigo Cardenas cut the Gator in half when he connected on a ball from Russell Vernon in the 72nd minute. Eight minutes later, Tyler Reinhart tied the game for the Broncos on a breakaway. The game remained 2-2 until the 98th minute in the first overtime when Reinhart connected on another breakaway off a pass from Marco Glogowsky.
Cal Poly Pomona out-shot the Gators 22-16 including 9-7 in shots on goal and also had one more corner kick than SF State (3-2).
Mike McNeill (Oakdale, California, Oakdale HS) had six saves in goal for the Gators. Brad Jones had three saves in the first half for Cal Poly Pomona while Chris Otani had two saves in the final 53:25 for the Broncos.
