Gators Tie Cal State Stanislaus in Season Finale

Robert Maeda wrapped up his Gator career with a goal on Sunday vs. CS Stanislaus.
SAN FRANCISCO The San Francisco State men's soccer team closed out its 2009 campaign with a 1-1 double overtime tie against Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday at Cox Stadium.

The Gators, who played their eighth overtime match of the season, finished with a 6-10-4 overall record and a 3-9-4 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Warriors moved to 11-6-2 on the year and 8-6-2 in conference action.

SF State persevered against the CSUS attack for most of the day, as the Warriors maintained a 23-10 advantage in shots, including a 13-2 margin in attempts on goal.

Nevertheless, the Gators dented the scoreboard first when Robert Maeda (Beaverton, Ore., Jesuit HS) connected for his first goal of the season from three yards away on the right side after gathering a short pass from Charles Conway (Albuquerque, N.M., Sandia HS, Univ. of New Mexico) in the 29th minute.

The Warriors got the equalizer just over seven minutes later when Victor Regaldo came up with a loose ball in heavy traffic and tapped in his CCAA-leading 13th goal of the season from three yards out at the 35:59 mark.

SF State had four chances to break the stalemate in the final nine minutes of regulation, but was unable to convert. Antonio Ugarte (Danville, Calif., San Ramon Valley HS ) found daylight in the middle from 20 yards out; however, his shot sailed high in the 88th minute as the contest headed into overtime.

The Gators managed one shot in the two extra periods, but almost caught an enormous break in final minute of the second overtime session when Spencer Schwandt (Napa, Calif., Vintage) attempted a cross pass that deflected off unsuspecting defender Keith Ramirez of CSUS and struck the right post.

SF State goalkeeper Mike McNeill (Oakdale, Calif., Oakdale HS, CSU Stanislaus) endured a busy afternoon, stopping 11 Warrior shots, while CSUS netminder Javier Rosales was credited with one save.

Sunday's match was delayed by 25 minutes after the Warriors' bus experienced mechanical problems en route from Turlock. Nevertheless, the Gators were still able to hold a short ceremony beforehand, recognizing their five seniors, Silvestre Arias (Fresno, Calif., San Joaquin Memorial HS, Fresno City College), Dylan Glass (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Alta Loma HS), Robert Maeda, Spencer Schwandt and Wes Whitt (Alpine, Calif., Cathedral Catholic HS).
