FULLERTON, Calif.---- SF State's men's basketball team held the Hope International Royals (4-2) to just 27% shooting from the field while forcing 22 turnovers by the Royals in their 69-44 non-conference win at Hope International's Darling Pavilion in Fullerton, California.
Nefi Perdomo (Oakland, California, Skyline ) paced the Gators (5-1) with 13 points off the bench.
“I liked our intensity and it was great to have everyone contribute,” said SF State Head Coach Bill Treseler. “We need to be much more consistent in our rebounding, execution, and our free throw shooting as we head into conference play next week,” added Treseler. “
Tim Pratt (Eureka, California, College of the Redwoods) and
Jeremy Francis (San Francisco, California, Mayville State University) were standouts for us this evening and our defense at times was exceptional.”
The Gators jumped out to an early 11-3 in the first five minutes of the game capped by Perdomo's lay-up. Hope International though came right back and cut the visitors' lead to 11-7 in the next minute on a Marko Torovic lay-up. SF State then went on a 15-4 run capped by a Perdomo three off an assist from
Aaron Trigg (Suisun City, California, Napa Valley College) to give the Gators a 26-11 lead. They increased that lead to 19 (34-15) on a two made free throws by
Ralph Nevarez (West Covina, California, East Los Angeles College) with 2:24 to go in the half. SF State took a 37-21 lead into the locker room on a made lay-up by
Jeremy Francis.
Phoenix O'Rourke (San Mateo, California, Junipero Serra) lay-up capped a 9-2 run by the Gators in the first four minutes of the second half as the visitors increased their lead to 23 (46-23). Stephen Thomas' jumper at the 7:41 mark cut SF State's lead to 14 (53-39), which was the closest the Royals would get as the Gators built their lead to 27 as they outscored Hope International 15-2 in the next six minutes to take a 68-41 lead. The Royals scored three of the final four points of the game to make the final, 69-44 SF State.
Pratt added 10 points for the Gators as their bench outscored the Royals' 40-27. SF State also recorded 13 steals with four players recording two each in
Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wisconsin, Reedley College),
Aaron Trigg,
Daniel Trammel (Oceanside, California, El Camino), and
Joshua Hash (Eureka, California, College of the Redwoods).
Aaron Trigg had a season high three blocked shots to go along with his five rebounds. SF State also out-rebounded the Royals, 42-29 with Nevarez and Hoskins leading the way each with six.
Kris Rosales paced the Royals with 16 points while they also did not make a three-pointer going 0 for 4 for the night.
SF State is off until the Gators host Chico State in both its conference and home opener on Friday, December 4
th at 7:30 pm at SF State's Main Gymnasium.
