SAN FRANCISCO – Senior
Brittany Garrett (Hoover, Ala., Spain Park HS, Southern Miss) finished in 34
th place on Saturday to lead the San Francisco State women's cross country team at the 2009 NCAA Division II West Region Championships at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park. Garrett posted a season-fast time of 22 minutes, 48.6 seconds in the 6,000-meter race, as the Gators placed 13
th out of 25 schools with 339 points.
Two-time defending national champion Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific claimed the individual crown with a winning time of 20:08.9, outdistancing Western Washington's Sarah Porter, who took second with a 20:42.3 clocking, while the Alaska Anchorage trio of Hallide Wilt (21:11.5), Ruth Keino (21:11.8) and Miriam Kipng'Eno (21:17.9) rounded out the top five.
Bolstered by the aforementioned placers, Alaska Anchorage captured the team title with 35 points, followed by Chico State (58 points), Seattle Pacific (89 points) and Western Washington (64 points), as the top four women's teams advance to the NCAA Division II Championships, Nov. 21, in Evansville, Ind. Meanwhile, Cal State L.A.'s Vivien Wadeck (10th, 21:34) and Megan Rolland of Humboldt State (11th, 21:41.5) also punched their ticket to the national meet after finishing as the top two individual runners from non-advancing teams in the West Region.
SF State also received a 6K career-best effort from junior
Tanya Ferreira (Watsonville, Calif., North Monterey County HS) who clocked in at 22:57.6 to finish in 41
st, while senior
Claire Fleming (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Trabuco Hills HS, Orange Coast College) also notched a collegiate-fast 23:53.2 en route to an 81st-place showing. Freshman
Sue Choi (Clovis, Calif., Buchanan HS) was the next Gator to cross the finish line, landing in the 88
th spot with a time of 24:02.1, followed by sophomore
Karen Marchan (Laguna Hills, Calif., Laguna Hills HS) (95
th, 24:10.6), senior
Caitlyn Buske (Folsom, Calif., Folsom HS, Sierra College) (104
th, 24:21.3) and junior
