SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State baseball team dropped to 4-2 on the 2009 campaign with a 14-0 defeat at the hands of visiting Sonoma State on Tuesday at Maloney Field. The Seawolves (6-0) erupted for five runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead and never looked back.
Sean Proni (San Francisco, College of Marin) and
Jeff McCall (Santa Rosa, California, Pinor, Santa Rosa Junior College) had two hits apiece to lead the Gators, while
Bobby Carini (De La Salle, Canada College)added his third stolen base of the year. SSU was paced by Danny Pignataro, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Max Kirk, Ian Bridges and Ryan Stevens each had two hits as well.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, SF State loaded the bases after consecutive one-out singles by Proni and Carini, who each advanced on a McCall groundout, and a walk to
Ryan Williams (Woodland, Yuba College). However, the Gators were unable to capitalize, as Seawolf starter Gary Moran got the final out of the inning on a strikeout.
SSU tallied a pair of scores in the second and then broke the game open in the fourth, plating five runs to build an 8-0 bulge. Mark Pestorich supplied the big hit in the inning with a two-run double to centerfield, driving in Kirk and Ryan Averkieff. The Seawolves then added a trio of runs in the sixth and ninth to complete the scoring.
Four SSU pitchers combined to keep the Gators in check throughout the day, with Taylor Lewis (1-0) picking up the victory after three innings of two-hit relief.
Patrick Haugen (Cayucos, California, Cuesta College) (1-1) took the loss for SF State after allowing eight runs on seven hits and two walks in four innings of work. Meanwhile,
Oscar Campos (Santa Monica, California, Santa Monica, LA City College) struck out three batters in 1.2 innings of relief for the Gators.
SF State returns to the diamond on Friday, Feb. 13 when it takes on the Academy of Art University in an afternoon tilt at Maloney Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
