San Francisco, Calif.--- In thanks to
Jeff Henning's career high 9 strikeouts in SF State's 2-1 win over the visiting Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech (1-3) in game two of this afternoon's doubleheader at Maloney Field, the Gators took the weekend series as they won three of the four games. With today's split, SF State improves to 4-1. The Gators lost the opener this afternoon 4-2.
Back to back doubles by Trent Smith and Ryson Mauricio in the top of the fifth gave the Hustlin' Owls a 1-0 lead in game one. They added two more runs in the sixth to increase their lead to 3-0. SF State battled back scoring twice in the seventh inning capped by a one out single by
Greg Kline. Chad Trevisan shut the Gators in the final two and two-thirds innings to record his first save of the season.
Kyle Mastellar (Corning, Shasta Junior College) (0-1) picked up the loss for the Gators as he pitched 5.1 innings, giving up six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out seven and walking two.
Daniel Abeloe (Ventura, Oxnard College)pitched the final 3.2 innings, giving up four this and one run while striking out two and walking one.
Jeff McCall (Santa Rosa, California, Santa Rosa Junior College) and
Javier Solis (Gridley, Yuba College) each had two hits to lead SF State's hitting attack in game one.
Neil Emerson (1-0) picked up the win for Oregon Tech, pitching six scoreless innings of three-hit ball while striking out three and walking two. Trevisan had one strikeout while he gave up four hits and two runs (one earned). Mauricio finished game one with three hits and Cory Spires and Lee Eklund each had two hits for the Hustlin' Owls.
Game two was a pitching dual between SF State's
Jeff Henning (Chico, California, Shasta College)and the Hustlin' Owls' Chris Thomas.
Henning pitched six innings, giving up six hits and one run while striking out a career high 9 batters and walking just one in picking up his first win of the season.
Lorenzo Ubungen pitched the seventh inning, giving up just one hit en route to his first save as a Gator. Chris Thomas (0-1) took the loss for Oregon Tech as he pitched 5.1 innings of seven-hit ball giving up two runs while striking out three and walking three.
Dylan Hansen put Oregon Tech on the board first in the top of the first inning with a one-out RBI single to left field which scored Mauricio.
McCall's two-out RBI single in the Gator half of the third tied the game at one. The game remained tied at one until
Ricky Del Zompo (Napa, Napa Valley College)drove in
Matt Memeo (Cottonwood, California, Shasta College) with a one-out single to left field with what proved to be the game-winner.
Sean Proni (San Francisco, College of Marin)was 3 for 3 to lead the Gators' hitting attack while Spires had two hits for Oregon Tech. SF State (4-1) will continue its home stand this Tuesday, February 10
th at 2pm for a non-conference game with Sonoma State.
