San Francisco, Calif.--- The 16th ranked Chico State Wildcats hit four home runs to key their doubleheader sweep of the SF State Gators (5-16, 1-14 CCAA) this afternoon at SF State's Maloney Field to improve their record to 14-9 overall and 10-5 in the CCAA. The Wildcats won game one 12-3 and the night cap 6-1.
Chico State took an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Robert Mills that scored Kevin Seaver in the top of the second inning.
Zack Anderson's solo home run in the Gator half of the third inning tied the game at 1-1. The game remained tied at 1-1 until Chico State broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning keyed by Eric Stephens' two-run home run to left center.
The Wildcats scored four more runs in their half of the seventh with Stephens' hitting another two-run home run to increase Chico State's lead to 10-1. They added two more runs in the eighth on a two-run home run by Robert Mills to make it 12-1 Wildcats. SF State's
Bobby Carini (Pleasant Hill, California, Canada College) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the frame to make the final 12-3 Wildcats.
Kyle Mastellar (Corning, Shasta Junior College)(0-5) took the loss for SF State while Pete Mickartz (2-2) picked up the win for Chico State. Mickartz pitched six innings, giving up four this and one run while striking out seven. Josh Meager and Adam Arakawa each had three hits for the Wildcats while Stephens finished game one with four RBIs.
Ryan Williams (Woodland, Yuba College) had two of the Gators' seven hits.
The nightcap was scoreless until the Wildcat fifth, when they scored an unearned run as Bryan Willson opened up the inning with a walk and later scored on a Gator error.
Ricky Del Zompo (Napa, Napa Valley College) scored the tying run in the Gators' fifth after reaching on a single to open the inning and later scored on back to back wild pitches by the Wildcats. In the top of the sixth, Chico State took the lead on a two-run home run to right center by Arakawa. The Wildcats then broke the game open with a four-run seventh innings.
Jeff Henning (Chico, California, Shasta College)(1-3) took the loss for SF State, pitching 6 innings of two-hit ball while giving up three runs (two earned), striking out three and walking five.
Sean Sean Proni (San Francisco, College of Marin)was 3 for 3 for SF State and
Zack Anderson (Ventura, California, Ventura College)was 2 for 2.
Joel Garcia (4-1) picked up the win for Chico State, pitching a complete game, giving up seven hits and one run while striking out seven and walking one. Arakawa had two of the Wildcats' seven hits while driving in three runs.
The two teams will finish the four-game series with a noon starting doubleheader tomorrow at SF State's Maloney Field.
