San Francisco, Calif.---
– The San Francisco State baseball team jumped back into conference play on Friday with a split with the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos (20-16, 13-13 CCAA) losing game one 7-4 and coming back to win game two 14-6. In game two,
Greg Kline (Las Vegas, Nevada, San Joaquin Delta College) was 4 for 5 with five runs batted in while scoring three times to key the doubleheader split.
In game one, the Broncos drew first blood in the top of the second inning when Richard McDowall singled down the left field line to drive in Nick Tanos, who led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second after Jenzen Torres was hit by a pitch. Shortly thereafter, Torres crossed the plate on Frank Klopp's RBI groundout, which put the visitors up 2-0.
The Gators plated two runs in the bottom of the second to knot the score at 2-2, as
Ricky Del Zompo (Napa, Napa Valley College) knocked in
Ryan Williams (Woodland, Yuba College)with a single to center, while
Matt Memeo (Cottonwood, California, West Valley, Shasta College) came home on
Nick Nyman (Susanville, California, Lassen College) chopper that found an opening through the right side.
CPP took the lead for good in the top of third, however, as McDowell drove in a pair with a double down the left field line to highlight a three-run outburst. The Broncos then stretched their advantage to 6-2 in the top of the fourth on Erik Riedel's RBI single which brought in Joe Villa.
SF State responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to narrow the deficit to 6-4.
Sean Proni drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Nyman, who previously walked and advanced to third on a
Bobby Carini (Pleasant Hill, California, De La Salle, Canada College) single and a walk to
Jake Moore (Palisade, Colorado, Palisade, Cerritos College). Williams then followed with a sacrifice fly to right, which plated Carini.
The Broncos added an insurance run in the eighth as McDowell scored from third when Marcus Makia was caught in a run-down between first and second on a stolen base attempt.
The Gators managed to put a pair of runners aboard with two outs in the ninth on consecutive singles by Proni and Williams. However, CPP reliever Brad Wilson ended the threat with a strikeout to earn his first save of the season.
SF State's 10-hit attack was paced by Memeo, who went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Williams was 2-3 while contributing a run and an RBI.
Geoff Broussard (2-1) picked up the victory, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings, while
Jeff Henning (Chico, California, Pleasant Valley, Shasta College)( 1-6) took the loss after allowing six runs on five hits four walks in six innings on the mound.
In the night cap, the Broncos scored first on a RBI single by Jeff Ringholm in the second inning. The Gators took the lead in the bottom of the inning on back to back RBIs by Kline and
Javier Solis (Gridley, Yuba College).
Cal Poly Pomona then took a 5-2 lead with a four-run third inning keyed by a two-run single by Richard McDowell. SF State retook the lead for good with a five-run third inning which was keyed by a two-run triple by Kline.
SF State added five more runs in the fifth inning as the Gators increased its lead to 10-5. The Broncos scored their final run in the sixth inning on a RBI single by Joe Villa. SF State added two more insurance runs in its half of the seventh on a two-run single by Kline.
The Gators had 17 hits in the game besides Kline,
Ryan Williams (Woodland, Yuba College) had four this while Solis, Garcia, and Proni each added two.
Ryan DeJesus (Westlake Village) (1-1) picked up the win in relief pitching four innings while striking out two and giving up five hits and one run.
Kevin Bosson (3-4) recorded the loss for the Broncos, which had 13 hits themselves including three each by Joe Villa and Nick Tanos.
The two teams will wrap-up the four-game weekend series tomorrow morning at 11am for another doubleheader at SF State's Maloney Field.
