Gators Unable to Avoid Sweep to Coyotes

Matt Memeo drilled his fourth homer of the year and scored two runs on Saturday in game one at CSUSB.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. The San Francisco State baseball team dropped a pair of games to Cal State Bernardino, 7-3 and 5-1, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday at Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino, Calif.  With the sweep, the Gators slip to 14-32 on the season and 7-28 in the CCAA, while the Coyotes raise their record to 22-23 overall and 16-18 in league play.

In the opener, SF State drew first blood in the top of the second inning on Matt Memeo's (Cottonwood, California, West Valley, Shasta College) solo home run down the left field line.  However, CSUSB's Chris LeFay went deep in the bottom of the frame, knotting the score at 1-1.

The Coyotes broke open the contest with six runs in the bottom of the third, with Johnnie Haas supplying a two-run blast over the center field fence.  Shortly thereafter, CSUSB pushed across two runs on a pair of Gator throwing errors, while Andrew Harrison delivered a two-run double.

SF State plated two runs in the top of the sixth as Greg Kline (Las Vegas, Nevada, San Joaquin Delta College) singled home Memeo, who previously walked, while Jake Moore (Palisade, Colorado, Palisade, Cerritos College) soon followed with an RBI double down the left field line.  However, the Gators were unable to sustain the momentum, notching just one hit the rest of the way.

Coyote starter Erick Carrillo (4-5) went eight innings, giving up three runs on six hits and four walks while striking out six en route to the victory, while Jeff Henning (Chico, California, Pleasant Valley, Shasta College) (1-7) took the loss after allowing seven runs (three earned) on five hits and six walks in four innings of duty.

SF State was undone by a big inning once again in the nightcap as CSUSB erupted for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie.  Jordan Lowe and Andrew Tapia each drew a walk with the bases loaded, while Chris Olsen added a two-run single.

The Gators scored their lone run of the game in the top of the fourth when Ryan Williams (Woodland, Yuba College) singled to drive in Sean Proni (Valencia, CA, College of Marin), who led off the inning with his team-leading 16th double of the season.  SF State managed to put two runners aboard in the fifth, but could not capitalize as Coyote pitcher Andrew Schile received a pick-off and a groundout to end the threat.

Schile (1-2) pitched a complete game to pick up the win, scattering seven hits and two walks in seven innings, while reliever Danny Graybill (Santa Barbara, California, San Marcos, Santa Barbara City College) (0-3) was saddled with the loss after entering in the sixth, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks. Starter Kyle Mastellar (Corning, Shasta Junior College) went five innings for the Gators, allowing one run on four hits and one walk.

SF State concludes its 2009 campaign on Sunday with a single game at CSUSB beginning at noon.
