LA JOLLA--- In both teams' 2009 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener, it was the visiting SF State Gators and the host UC San Diego Tritons playing to a scoreless double overtime tie. With the tie, SF State is now 3-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the CCAA while UC San Diego is 3-0-2 overall and 0-0-1.
“It was a hard fought tie and I feel good about getting a point out of this game,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “Both teams had their chances, just could not get the ball into the net,” added Hunter. “Our guys are getting better with each game.”
UC San Diego out-shot the Gators 29-12 and recorded more shots on goals 10-5 than its visitors. The Tritons also had 7 corner kicks to SF State's four.
Freshman
Mike McNeill (Oakdale, California, Oakdale HS) recorded 10 saves in goal for the Gators en route to his third complete shutout while Peter Akman had five in the net for UC San Diego.
The Tritons had the first chance of the game, but McNeill stopped Evan Walker's shot from going in the 15
th minute while the Gators first chance came in the 23
rd when Akman stopped
Dylan Glass (Rancho Cucamonga, California, Alta Loma)shot from going into the goal.
The Gators came out in the second half and recorded two shots on goal in the first six minutes both by
Arnol Arcetea (Bay Point, California, Mt. Diablo ), but Akman once again stopped both. Also with two minutes left, Glass' shot went wide right which could have been the game-winner.
UC San Diego controlled the first overtime period recording two shots on goal and six total shot attempts with McNeill recording two saves. Once again with just five seconds left in the overtime, Akman stopped a header shot by Glass. Second overtime saw six combined shot attempts by both teams with just two shot on goal attempts by the Tritons, but none went into the net for either team.
SF State continues its road trip this Sunday at 2pm for another conference game. This time, the Gators will face Cal State East Bay in Hayward. The Pioneers lost 2-0 to Cal State Monterey Bay in their conference opener in Hayward.
