SAN FRANCISCO –After a tough loss to Chico State the previous night, the San Francisco State women's volleyball team bounced back in a big way Saturday evening, sweeping past Cal State Stanislaus in three sets (25-13, 25-18, 25-17) at the Main Gymnasium.
With the victory, the Gators improve to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Warriors dip to 5-4 on the season and 0-2 in league play.
Senior
Beth Perkins (Woodland, Calif., Woodland Christian HS, Mt. Hood CC) recorded her sixth double-double of the season, notching a team-best 11 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore
Halimah Oswald (San Francisco, Calif., Waldorf HS) posted a splendid .779 hitting percentage with seven kills on nine attempts and no errors. Crisp passing was also on display as freshman
Iris Tolenada (Antioch, Calif., Deer Valley HS) contributed 33 assists.
Collectively, SF State outhit CSUS .330-.083, including a .357-(-.125) advantage in the first set as the home team took control early. The Warriors managed just five kills during the frame while committing eight errors on 24 tries.
Leading by a slim 6-5 margin, the Gators quickly widened the gap to 17-8 as consecutive kills by Oswald and Perkins ignited an 11-3 run. Shortly thereafter, SF State captured the set on a CSUS service error and another Perkins kill.
The Gators showed no signs of letting up in the second frame, racing to a 15-5 lead and never looking back. The Warriors were able to pull within 22-15, but the deficit proved too much to overcome.
SF State maintained the upper hand throughout the third set as CSUS could not draw any closer than five points after the host school built a 13-5 bulge.
SF State returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 15, when it travels south to Seaside, Calif., for a showdown with CCAA foe Cal State Monterey Bay. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
