Hayward, Calif.--- SF State's
Edgar Villagrana (Pittsburg, California, Pittsburg) scored two goals including the game's first goal in the 15
th minute on an unassisted goal from 15 yards to key the Gators' 4-1 road conference victory over Cal State East Bay (1-5, 0-2 CCAA) this afternoon in Hayward. With his two goals, Villagrana is tied for the team lead with four.
“We played a hard fought match today and did the work to get the win on the road this afternoon,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “We got the early lead, but Cal State East Bay fought back and then we opened the game up after the penalty kick,” added Hunter. “I thought the key to the match was that we were able to use our bench and we got to play 16 guys in our game,” stated Hunter. “Our depth definitely was an advantage for us this afternoon.”
The game remained 1-0 Gators until the 55
th minute, when Michael Ross on a header off a free kick from Manny Cardenas to tie the game at 1-1 for Cal State East Bay.
Spencer Schwandt (Napa, California, Viintage)connected on a penalty kick in the 75
th minute to give the Gators a 2-1 advantage. Then less than a minute later, Villagrana connected on
Dylan Glass (Rancho Cucamonga, California, Alta Loma)team high fourth assist on a header to give SF State a 3-1 lead.
Glass then increased the visitors' lead to 4-1 in the 81
st minute off a corner kick from
Roberto Escobar (San Francisco, California, Mission HS).
SF State (4-1-1, 1-0-1 CCAA) out-shot the Pioneers 16-5 and also recorded more shot on goal attempts (8-2). The Gators also had more corner kicks than Cal State East Bay (7-2).
Mike McNeill had one save in net for the Gators while Cal State East Bay's Cesar Villa had four saves.
The Gators return home this Friday, September 18th at 12:30pm, when they host the defending NCAA Division II National Champions, Cal State Dominguez Hills at Cox Stadium.
