ARCATA.---
Antonio Ugarte (Danville, Calforna, San Ramon Valley ) scored twice to key the SF State Gators 3-0 win over the Humboldt State Lumberjacks this afternoon in Arcata. Ugarte scored the Gators' first goal in the 53
rd minute and then added his second seven minutes later.
Eric Scolman (Oceanside, California, Oceanside) recorded five saves en route to his first collegiate shutout in goal for SF State (5-4-1, 2-3-1 CCAA) while it was the Gators fifth shutout of the season.
“We outplayed Humboldt State this afternoon on its home turf, which is a tough place to play,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “After our performance in the second half at Sonoma State ,our guys wanted to come out and prove themselves and we did that with our win on the road this afternoon.”
Humboldt State (1-7-2, 0-5-1 CAA) came out with four shot attempts in the the first 18 minutes of the first half, which
Eric Scolman recorded three of his five saves. SF State's first shot attempt came in the 27
th minute, which
Wes Whitt (Alpine, California, Cathedral Catholic) shot went high.
Dylan Glass (Rancho Cucamonga, California, Alta Loma) had an attempt two minutes that hit the post. Six minutes later,
Charles Conway (Albuquerque, New Mexico, University of New Mexico) attempt to give the Gators a 1-0 lead was stopped by the Lumberjacks' Kyle Verle. The game remained scoreless going into the half as Humboldt State's two chance in the final three minutes went wide left and hit the post.
Eight minutes into the second half saw the game's first goal come as the Gators'
Antonio Ugarte connected on a throw in by
Dylan Glass to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Humboldt State tried to tie the game two minutes later, but Doug Simpson's shot sailed wide right, Josh Suggs' shot was high and his next attempt was stopped by Scolman.
Ugarte scored his second goal of the game and third of the season after Glass passed it to
Spencer Schwandt (Napa, California, Viintage) and then Schwandt centered it to Ugarte for the tap-in in the 61
st minute. The Gators sealed the win in the 74
th minute on
Arnol Arcetea (Bay Point, California, Mt. Diablo ) first goal of the season from 25 yards out that sailed over the goalkeeper's head into the net to give SF State a 3-0 lead.
The Gators had a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks while Kyle Verle had one save in 67 minutes for the Lumberjacks and Davis Zwick had none in the final 23 minutes.
SF State continues its season long four-game road trip this Friday, October 2
nd for a 7pm conference game in Turlock against Cal State Stanislaus. The Warriors lost 2-0 at No. 3 Cal State LA this afternoon in Los Angeles.
