SAN FRANCISCO---- SF State junior guard
Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wisconsin, Reedley College) scored a season high 26 points to key their 67-61 victory over CSU San Bernardino this evening in a conference match-up at SF State's Main Gymnasium. The Gators improve to 13-6 overall and 6-5 in the CCAA while the Coyotes fall to 11-4 overall and 9-2 in the CCAA. SF State snapped the Coyotes' six-game winning streak and put the Gators into a tie for sixth place with Chico State.
“That's a solid win over an outstanding team,” said SF State Head Coach Bill Treseler. “Our guys have held together through a rough patch and it's great to see them rewarded,” added Treseler. “We played with pose down the stretch and knocked down some key free throws.”
The first ten minutes of the game saw five ties until the Gators outscored their visitors 9-3 to take a 22-16 lead with 5:16 left in the half capped by two free throws by Hoskins. SF State increased its lead to eight (26-18) on a lay-up by
Nefi Perdomo (Oakland, California, Skyline ). The Coyotes cut the hosts team lead to three (28-25) with 1:01 to go, but the Gators took a 31-25 lead into the locker room on three-point play by
Derek Fletcher (San Jose, California, Branham).
CSU San Bernardino started the second stanza with an 11-5 run to tie the game at 36-36. The Gators followed that with a 14-7 of their own to take a 50-43 lead with 12:03 on the clock. CSU San Bernardino would not go away as Bryan LeDuc's two made free throws with 9:37 to go capped a 5-0 run by the visitors to cut the Gator lead to 50-48.
Phoenix O'Rourke (San Mateo, California, Junipero Serra) three off an assist from Hoskins stopped the Coyote run with 7:49 to go, but CSU San Bernardino would not go away as they took a 56-55 lead on two free throws by Aaron Hill with 2:36 to go in regulation. Hoskins stepped up to hit a three to give SF State a 58-55 lead, a lead they would not relinquish.
The Gators increased their lead to 61-56 on a three-point play by Perdomo with 51 seconds to go, but CSU San Bernardino's Hill made two free throws to cut the lead to 61-58. Hoskins came through again with two made free throws with 30 seconds to go, but Bryan LeDuc hit a three with 21 seconds to go to give SF State just a 63-61 lead.
The Coyotes were forced to foul and Perdomo hit two clutch free throws with 14 seconds left in regulation to increased SF State's lead to 65-61. On the Coyotes' next possession, they missed and
Tim Pratt rebounded the ball and Hoskins sealed the 67-61 win with a lay-up as the clock ran out.
LeDuc finished with 17 points and 16 rebounds while Aaron Hill had 18 points to lead the way for the Coyotes. Devon Davis also chipped in 10 points for CSU San Bernardino. The Coyotes were held to just 39% shooting from the field and turned the ball over 21 times.
Besides Hoskins' 26 points, O'Rourke chipped in 14 points. SF State also had 10 steals, five by Hoskins and three by O'Rourke.
The Gators will being a four-game road trip this Friday, January 30 in Turlock, for a 7:30pm scheduled tip-off with Cal State Stanislaus.
