POMONA, Calif-- SF State's men's soccer team tried to rally back from a three goal deficit this afternoon in Pomona, but the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos held on for a 3-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory. The Broncos snapped the Gators' three-game winning streak and improved their record at home to 5-1.
"Unfortunately, we did not play well in the first 35 minutes as we controlled the rest of the game," said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. "Cal Poly Pomona is a really good team with talented athletes," added Hunter. "We had some three solid chances to score, but their goalkeeper came up big for them."
Jonathan Kerns connected on a ball from Luis Gonzales with less than two minutes into the game to give the Broncos (7-4-1, 5-4-1 CCAA) an early 1-0 lead. Cal Poly Pomona continued their onslaught as the Broncos had three more shot on goal attempts in the next 20 minutes, but the Gators'
Mike McNeill (Oakdale, California, Cal State Stanislaus) recorded three of his five saves on the day. The hosts did double their lead as Gonzales connected on a ball from Sean Gurley and Jonathan Ennis in the 29th minute. Then 17 seconds later Gonzales had another assist as he assisted on Anthony Salcedo's goal to give the Broncos a 3-0 lead.
Adam Nowak (San Ramon, California, University of San Francisco) looked to cut into the Bronco lead for the Gators but his shot attempt was stopped by Andrew Todd at the 32:45 mark of the first half. SF State kept their offensive attack going as freshman
Ryan Beaudry (Temecula, California, Chaparral HS)attempt in the 35th minute also was stopped by Todd.
Tony Terrazas (Irvine, California, Cal State Fullerton) put the Gators on the board as he connected on a ball from
Jorge Calderon, Jr. (Vista, California, Palomar College) to cut into the Bronco lead, 3-1, in the 43rd minute.
SF State (6-5-1, 4-5-1 CCAA) continued its onslaught, but Todd held the Gators as stopped Beaudry's attempt in the 56th minute,
Saman Assadi (Sacramento, California, American River College)in the 60th, and
Charles Conway (Albuquerque, New Mexico, University of New Mexico) attempt in the 65th minute. Assadi had another attempt stopped by Todd, which was Todd's sixth save of the day, in the 70th minute.
The Gators did not give up though as
Edgar Villagrana (Pittsburg, California)scored in the 86th minute on an assist from
Sasha Chalak (Concord, California, Acalanes) to make it 3-2 Broncos. That was a little late as the Broncos controlled the ball in the final four minutes.
The visitors did outshoot the Broncos 17-14 including 13-6 in the second half and also had 12 corner kicks to Cal Poly Pomona's 0. SF State also had four shot on goal attempts in the second half to the Broncos' two.
SF State will continue its season-long five-game road trip this Friday at 3pm in Seaside as the Gators face Cal State Monterey Bay in a CCAA match-up. The two teams will then play in San Francisco a week from today with the game set for an 11:30 am start at SF State's Cox Stadium.
