SEASIDE, Calif.– Cal State Monterey Bay's Eli Zamora scored on a header off a corner kick from Tyler Dapello for what proved to be the game-winner in the 62nd minutes in this Otters' 1-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) game with the visiting SF State Gators at the Otter Soccer Complex in Seaside. This was Zamora's first goal of the season.
“Give Cal State Monterey Bay credit, they came out today and battled,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “Hopefully we will come out ready to play against them on Sunday.”
Early on the Gators (6-6-1, 4-6-1 CCAA) had their chances to break the early scoreless tie.
Sasha Chalak shot on goal attempt was stopped by Sam Campanelli in the third minute. The next shot on goal attempt came in the 32nd by
Edgar Villagrana (Pittsburg, California), but once again Campanelli stopped the Gator scoring chance. Eight minutes later,
Ryan Beaudry (Temecula, California, Chaparral HS) shot hit the post which would have given SF State the 1-0 lead.
Cal State Monterey Bay's only shot on goal attempt in the first half came off the foot of Beau Villaneuva with five minutes left in the half as the Gators'
Mike McNeill (Oakdale, California, Cal State Stanislaus) recorded one of his season high 7 saves on the day to send the game into the half scoreless.
The Otters (1-9-2, 1-8-2 CCAA) came out strong in the second half as they had two chances to break the tie, but McNeill stoped Max Brixey and Eli Zamora's attempt.
The Gators' Villagrana had two more chances to give the visitors the lead in the 52nd and 57th minute, but Campanelli had two of his five saves on the day.
Then in the 62nd minute, Zamara flicked a header over McNeil off a corner kick by Dapella for what proved to be the game-winner for the Otters.
SF State's Villagrana had a chance to tie the game, but his shot sailed high and then a minute later
Robert Garcia's attempt was stopped by the Otter defense.
The Otters were outshot by the Gators, 13-10 while Cal State Monterey Bay recorded two more shot on goal attempts then SF State (8-6).
The two teams will now travel to SF State's Cox Stadium this Sunday for an 11:30am starting conference game in San Francisco
