SAN FRANCISCO--- SF State sophomore forward
Edgar Villagrana (Pittsburg, California, Pittsburg) scored both of the Gators' goals in their 2-0 shutout win over the visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Otters this afternoon at SF State's Cox Stadium. With the win, the Gators split the season series with the Otters as Cal State Monterey Bay won 1-0 on Friday in Seaside.
“It was good to bounce back from Friday's l-0 loss to the Otters,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “We came out focus this afternoon and recorded the 2-0 win,” added Hunter. “I am glad to see that we responded today with a solid team effort.”
The Gators (7-6-1, 5-6-1 CCAA) controlled the majority of the game as they outshot their visitors 16-4 including 10-2 in the first half. They also recorded more corner kicks than the Otters (5-4).
Villagrana's first goal came in the 11th minute as he connected on a header off a cross from
Joseph Flores (Clovis, California, Clovis HS). Then four minutes later the Gators doubled their lead to 2-0 as Villagrana connected on a free kick from
Malcolm Linton (Pasadena, California, Pasadena City College).
The Otters (1-10-2, 1-9-2 CCAA) first shot on goal attempt came in the 36th minute, but SF State's
Mike McNeill (Oakdale, California, Cal State Stanislaus)made one of his three saves as he stopped Andy Binol's attempt.
The second half was controlled by the Gators and the weather as the rain came down and SF State recorded 6 shot attempts including one on goal. Cal State Monterey Bay had just two shot on goal attempts, one by Beau Villaneuva in the 49th minute and the final one in the 57th minute by Dylan Niven.
The Gators will return to the road this Friday, October 22nd at 7pm in Chico for a conference game with Chico State. SF State lost 2-1 to Chico State earlier this season in San Francisco.
