SAN FRANCISCO--- After falling behind 1-0 early in the first half, the visiting Sonoma State Seawolves scored two unanswered goals in the second half to key their 2-1 road CCAA victory over the SF State Gators at Crocker-Amazon Field in San Francisco. With the win, the Seawolves keep the CCAA play-off hopes alive while the Gators fall to 7-9-1 overall and 5-9-1 in the CCAA.
“We played a good first half, but we did not play a complete 90 minutes,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “The last complete of weeks we have not put together a complete game,” added Hunter. “We had some good individual performances today, but we are a little behind in a couple of spots.” “Give Sonoma State they came back and won this afternoon.”
Charles Conway (Albuquerque, New Mexico, University of New Mexico)gave the Gators the early 1-0 lead at the 9:33 mark of the first half as he connected on a header for his third goal of the season. Conway's goal was keyed by
Malcolm Linton (Pasadena, California, Pasadena City College)throw-in and
Sasha Chalak (Concord, California, Acalanes) pass.
Sonoma State's Taylor Varnadore's attempt to tie the game was stopped by the Gators'
Mike McNeill (Oakdale, California, Cal State Stanislaus)in the 10th minute. SF State had a chance to double their score by
Edgar Villagrana (Pittsburg, California, Pittsburg)shot was stopped by Juan Sosa. Then in the 29th minute, Villagrana had another shot on goal attempt but it hit the crossbar.
The game remained 1-0 Gators until the 57th minute, when Varnadore connected on his 7th goal of the season on an assist by Frank Becerril and Nico Spann.
Then four minutes later, Kelly Davila scored what proved to be the game-winner for Sonoma State (11-5-1, 9-5-1 CCAA) on a ball from Trevor Hurst and Cam Vickers.
SF State had a final chance to tie the game in the 70th minute, but Sosa recorded his fourth save of the day by stopping
Tony Terrazas (Irvine, California, Cal State Fullerton)shot on goal attempt.
Sonoma State outshot the Gators 13-10 including 8-2 in the second half, but only held a 6-5 advantage in shot on goal attempts.
McNeill had three saves in goal for the Gators, who will return home for the final game of the 2010 regular season this Sunday at 11:30am when they host the Humboldt State, who defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 5-1 this afternoon in Seaside.
Before the game on Sunday, the Gators will recognize both teams' seniors including their own in Jorge
Jorge Calderon, Jr. (Vista, California, Palomar College).,
