Adam Nowak (San Ramon, California, University of San Francisco) scored the game-winning goal with a little over six minutes to go in the game as he connected on a pass from
Joseph Flores (Clovis, California, Clovis HS) in front of the goal to give the SF State Gators the 1-0 road conference victory over Sonoma State this afternoon in Rohnert Park. With the win, the Gators finish the weekend 2-0 and are 5-4-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the CCAA.
“I am very proud of our guys as they starting to believe in themselves,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “Our guys did a great job today and kept their poise throughout the game this afternoon,” added Hunter. “This was a very good weekend for us going 2-0 against two division opponents on the road.”
The first half was evenly played as the Seawolves held a 7-5 advantage in shot attempts, but each team recorded two shot on goals. Aaron Glover had a chance to break the scoreless tie in the final seconds of the first half, but the Gators'
Mike McNeill (Oakdale, California, Oakdale HS) recorded one of his game-high four saves on the day.
The Gators came out strong in the second half as they outshot Sonoma State (6-4, 4-4 CCAA) 6-3. SF State had its first chance stopped by the Seawolves' Juan Sosa in the 68th minute. Then with 10 minutes left in regulation, McNeill stopped Erick Delgado's attempt to break the tie which set-up the heroics for Nowak.
Nowak took a pass from
Joseph Flores at the 83:57 and connected for his second goal of the season and first game-winning goal as a Gator. The assist was Flores' first in the Purple and Gold.
This was McNeill's second shutout of the season in goal for the Gators while Sosa recorded three saves in goal for Sonoma State.
SF State continues their five-game road trip this Friday, October 8 for a conference game at Cal State San Bernardino
