POMONA, Calif-- Reyana Colson recorded a double-double to key the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos 66-47 win over the visiting SF State Gators this evening in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) game at Cal Poly Pomona. Colson had 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead the way for the Broncos while La'kenya Simon West chipped in 17 points.
Michaela Booker (Union City,California, James Logan High School)paced the Gators with 11 points.
“Tonight we played well in spots,” said SF State Head Coach Joaquin Wallace. “But we need to play a full game, with a young team it is a challenge at this point.”
The Gators (1-7, 1-3 CCAA) jumped out an early 10-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game. Cal Poly Pomona cut that lead to just two (14-12) on two made free throws by Colson at the 12:20 mark of the first half, but the Gators increased their lead back to seven (21-14) on a jumper by
Dominique Hunter (San Francisco, California, Gateway)with 9:32 to go in the first stanza.
Cal Poly Pomona outscored the Gators in the final nine minutes of the half, 19-6 to take a 33-27 lead into the locker room.
The Broncos (6-1, 3-0 CCAA) continued their run in the second half as they increased their lead to 46-29 outscoring their visitors 13-2 in the first five minutes of the second stanza.
SF State did not give up though as the Gators went on a 16-7 in the next nine minutes to cut their hosts lead to single digits (53-45). The Broncos did not fold as they outscored the Gators 13-2 in the final minutes to take the 66-47 victory.
The Gators did hold the Broncos to just 33% shooting from the field including just 30% in the second half while forcing 13 turnovers.
SF State will return to the court tomorrow at 3pm for a CCAA showdown with Cal State San Bernardino in San Bernardino. The Coyotes lost 61-44 to Cal State Monterey Bay this evening in San Bernardino.
