SAN FRANCISCO--- The SF State baseball team swept this afternoon's non-conference doubleheader from the visiting Oregon Tech Hustlin' Owls this afternoon, 10-5 and 11-3 to improve their record to 5-4. With the sweep, the Gators take the weekend series three games to one.
“We are making improvements,” said SF State Head Coach
Mike Cummins. “Pat (Haugen) was outstanding in game two and it was nice to see us swing our bats today,” added Cummins. “We did a better job of two strike hitting by putting the ball into play,” stated the first-year head coach. “Spencer (Kreisberg) pitched well as did Kyle Masteller.”
Oregon Tech (3-9) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of game two as both Colin Stock and Ryson Mauricio each scored after opening the inning with back to back singles. SF State tied the game in its half of the inning as
Kevin Dultz (Altadena, California, Glendale Community College)and
Ryan Williams (Woodland, California, Yuba College)each scored after leading off the inning with back to back walks.
The Hustlin' Owls retook the lead in the top half of the fifth inning on a two-run single down the left field line by Mauricio, who finished going 4 for 5 with two RBIs. Once again, the Gators came back with a two-run inning of their own in the bottom of the fifth with Dultz' two-out home run being the big hit.
Oregon Tech came back though with a run in the eighth inning on a RBI single by Kyle Hansen to give the Hustlin' Owls a 5-4 lead going into the last inning and half.
SF State would not go away as the Gators retook the lead for good with a six-run eighth inning.
Matt Quintero (San Gabriel, California, University of San Francisco) opened up the inning reaching on an error and
Ben Mielke (Arcata, California, Shasta College) came in to pinch-run for him.
Nick Bowerman (Oakley, California, Mount Mercy College) followed that with a single through the left side.
Drew Andersen (Gilroy, California, William Penn University) pinch hit single drove in Mielke with the tying run and Bowerman scored the go-ahead run when
Brian Bianchi (Los Altos, California, College of San Mateo)reached on an error. The Gators added four more run to take a 10-5 lead going into the ninth.
Kyle Mastellar (Corning, California, Shasta Junior College) (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the win in relief for the Gators. He pitched four innings of five-hit ball giving up one run while striking out four and walking none.
Spencer Kreisberg (Tigard, Oregon, Los Medanos College) started the game for SF State, pitching five innings, giving up 10 hits and four runs while striking out six and walking one.
Dultz finished game one 3 for 4 with three RBIs and scored twice and Bowerman was 3 for 4 with a RBI.
In the nightcap,
Patrick Haugen (Cayucos, California, Cuesta College) (2-0) struck out ten and walked three en route to his first complete game shutout of the season. He gave up seven hits while stranding 11 runners on base. In 15.2 innings of work this season, Haugen has struck out 25 batters and walked just four while giving up nine hits.
The Gators scored all the runs that Haugen needed on Williams' two-out RBI double in the first inning that scored Andersen.
SF State (5-4) broke the game open with a four-run third inning which was keyed by
Devon King (San Diego, San Francisco City College) two-out single that scored Bowerman and Dultz. The Gators added six more runs in the sixth on six hits to increase their lead to 11-0, a lead that Haugen held in the seventh as Oregon Tech stranded two runs on second and third.
Frank Charlton (0-3) picked up the loss in game two for the Hustlin' Owls while seven different batters had hits for Oregon Tech.
Williams, King, and Proni all had two hits apiece for the Gators drove in three runs for SF State, who open up conference play this weekend for a four-game series in Carson, California, against the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills beginning with Friday, February 19th's single game at noon.
