SAN BERNARDINO--- The SF State guard duo of Nefi Perdomo (Oakland, California, Skyline ) and Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wisconsin, Reedley College) combined for 38 of the Gators' 58 points, but that was not enough as Cal State San Bernardino defeating their visitors, 74-58 at Coussoulis Arena on the campus of Cal State San Bernardino. Perdomo and Hoskins each had 19 points on a combined 17 of 29 shooting from the field. Bryan LeDuc paced the Coyotes (18-7, 16-5 CCAA) with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
“We did some things well, but overall we did not execute offensively or defend adequately to win a high level game,” said SF State Head Coach Bill Treseler. “I am confident that we will play much better tomorrow night at Cal Poly Pomona.”
The Gators also out-rebounded their hosts, 35-33 lead by Hoskins and Ralph Nevarez (West Covina, California, East Los Angeles College) each with a team high six rebounds. The Coyotes held SF State (17-12, 10-11 CCAA) to just 38% shooting from the field including just 26% from three-point land while shooting 51% from the field themselves and 50% from beyond the arc.
Phoenix O'Rourke (San Mateo, California, Junipero Serra) three at the 15:09 mark of the first half gave the Gators a 11-5 lead, but Ryan Kinney's three with 8:18 left in the half capped a 14-5 run by Cal State San Bernardino to give the hosts a 19-16 lead, a lead they did not relinquish the rest of the half.
David Jefferson's lay-up off an assist from Aaron Hill increased the Coyote lead to 32-20 with 4:23 to go in the first stanza. SF State outscored its hosts, 5-0 in the next two minutes capped by a Perdomo lay-up off an assist from Nevarez cut the Coyote lead to 32-25, but Cal State San Bernardino ended the half scoring the last four points of the half to take a 36-27 lead into the locker room.
The Coyotes started the second half where they left off the first, by going on a 16-5 run to take their largest lead (52-32) in the first four minutes of the half on a three by LeDuc. SF State cut the Coyote lead to 64-52 with 4:09 to go on a Perdomo lay-up, but that is the closest the visitors could get as Cal State San Bernardino outscored the Gators 10-6 in the final four minutes to take the 74-58 victory.
Besides LeDuc's double-double, Steve Gaston chipped in 12 points for the Coyotes, who are in third place in the CCAA going into the final game of the regular season tomorrow night. They are one-game behind co-leaders Cal Poly Pomona, who SF State will play tomorrow night in Pomona for a scheduled 7:30pm tip-off, and Humboldt State. Fourth place is held by Cal State Dominguez Hills with its 15-6 record, one-game behind the Coyotes.
SF State is in a four-way tie for fifth place in the conference with Chico State, Sonoma State, and Cal State LA. Chico State is at Cal State LA tomorrow night while Sonoma State is at Cal State East Bay.
