SAN BERNARDINO--- SF State's women's basketball team clinched the number six seed in next week's 2009-10 CCAA Women's Basketball Championships with a 60-53 victory over Cal State San Bernardino this evening at Coussoulis Arena in San Bernardino. The Gator post duo of Donisha Tate (Oakland, California, Las Posita College) and Dominique Hunter (San Francisco, California, Gateway) paced SF State as they each recorded their 14th and third double-doubles of the season. Tate had 19 points and 11 rebounds while Hunter added 18 points and 11 rebounds.
“Tonight was possibly the most gut wrenching win of the season,” said SF State Head Coach Joaquin Wallace. “You have to tip your hats to Cal State San Bernardino as the Coyotes played hard, we just were able to make plays in the win to pull away in combination of clamping down defensively to secure our 15th win of the season,” added Wallace.
The Gators, who clinched their third straight non-losing season, held Cal State San Bernardino (13-13, 9-12 CCAA) to just 33% shooting from the field including 20% from three-point land. They also out-rebounded their hosts, 50-36 and outscored them in the paint 32-16.
SF State (15-14, 11-10 CCAA) took a 21-14 lead with a little less than six minutes left in the half on a jumper by Tate. Cal State San Bernardino outscored its visitors 13-5 in the next four minutes to take a 27-26 lead, but Tate connected on 1 of 2 free throws and Hunter's lay-up with six seconds left sent the Gators into the locker room with a 29-27 lead.
The Coyotes outscored SF State 19-11 to take a 46-39 (their largest lead of the game) on an Ashlee Ford lay-up with 9:47 to go in the game. Hunter's two made throws with 6:54 to go to the Coyotes' lead to 47-45, but jumpers by Nikki Boone and Krystal Urzua, who led Cal State San Bernardino with 15 points, gave the Coyotes a 51-45 lead with just 5:34 to go in regulation.
SF State came back though with a 9-0 run of its own to take a 54-51 lead capped by a Nicole Hicks (Santa Clarita, CA, Saugus High School)jumper with 2:07 to go in the game. The Gators forced a turnover by the Coyotes and then Tate converted a layup off an assist from Hicks to increase their lead to 56-51.
The Coyotes' Emily Vore then connected on two made free throws, but SF State scored the final four points of the game to take the 60-53 victory. The 15 wins by the Gators is the most since the 1982-83 season and also tied for the most conference wins by a SF State's women's basketball since joining the CCAA.
Besides Tate and Hunter scoring in double digits, Hicks added 10 points for the Gators and also had two blocked shots.
SF State will round out its 2009-10 regular season tomorrow evening for a 5:30pm scheduled conference game in Pomona against the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 58-49 this evening to secure the number two seed in next week's conference tournament.
