Gators Swept by CSUSB Despite Scoring 14 Runs

Jessica Delgado Had Four Hits and 5 RBIs Including a 3-Run Home Run

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.---  Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes swept a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader from the visiting SF State Gators (10-8, 8-6 CCAA) 10-7, 8-7 this afternoon at Coyote Softball Park despite the Gators scoring 14 runs and having 21 hits on the day. 

 

In game one, the Coyotes (9-14, 8-6 CCAA) erupted for five runs in their half of the second inning capped by a Jaquelyn Holtzclaw grand slam home run to give the hosts the 5-0 lead. 

 

The Gators came back and tied the game at 5-5 with a five-run fourth inning.  Kendra Wood (San Jose, California, Lynbrook)opened the inning reaching on a three-base error.  Lea Cardenas (Sanger, California, Sanger)then walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Wood scored on a single up the middle by Alyssa Esquibel (San Jose, California, Archbishop Mitty).  Then Jessica Delgado (Monterey, California, North Monterey) came up and hit her second home run of the season, a three-run shot to put the Gators within a run of the Coyotes.  Rachael Kroneder (Pleasanton, California, Amador Valley)walked and Kylie Herrada (Gilroy, California, Gilroy) came in to pinch run for her and she tied the game when she scored on a sacrifice fly by Karolyn Gubbine (Richmond, California, Pinole Valley).

 

Cal State San Bernardino came back though and scored four runs in the bottom of the inning keyed by Priscila Curiel's and Felicia Cervantes' two-run singles to give the Coyotes a 9-5 lead.

 

The Gators made it 9-6 Cal State San Bernardino, when Kendra Wood scored on a RBI double by Esquibel after reaching base herself on a double with one out in the fifth.  The Coyotes added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-6 lead. 

 

SF State tried to come back in its half of the sixth inning.  Heather Jensen (Sacramento, California, Del Campo) had a lead-off single and advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a single by Gubbine.  Then with two outs, Kendra Wood singled home Jensen to make it 10-7 Cal State San Bernardino.    The Coyotes got the final Gator to strike out to end the sixth.  Then in SF State's seventh, Kroneder singled with two outs and was retired on second on a fielder's choice. 

 

Ashley Jackson (Vallejo, California, St. Patrick's-St. Vincent) (5-2) picked up the loss for the Gators, giving up six hits and nine runs (four earned) while striking out two and walking two.  Kendra Wood pitched 2.1 innings of relief, giving up two hits and one run, striking out three and walking one.  Brianne Godfredson (4-3) picked up the win in relief, pitching two innings, giving up three hits and two runs, striking out three and walking one.

 

Holtzclaw finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Cervantes also had two hits for the Coyotes.  Gubbine, Wood, and Esquibel each had two hits for the Gators. 

 

In the night cap, the Coyotes took a 2-0- lead in the first inning.  SF State cut into the lead on Kendra Wood's lead-off home run in the second inning.  The Gators took a 4-2 lead with a three-run third inning with Delgado's two-out two-run single through lthe left side being the big hit.

Holtzclaw scored in the Coyote third to cut into the Gator lead, 4-3 when she scored on an illegal pitch after reaching on a walk, stealing second and advancing to third on a sacrifice.

 

The Coyotes took the lead in their fifth inning on Curiel's two-run two-out single. 

SF State retook the lead with a three-run sixth inning to take an 8-5 lead.  Delgado led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a one-out single by Herrada.  Heather Jensen's single loaded the bases for Gubbine, who singled home Delgado.  Danielle Mestas then reach on an error which scored Herrada.  Then Jensen scored on an illegal pitch to give the Gators the 8-5 lead.


Cal State San Bernardino came back though in its half of the sixth inning.  Alex Mitchell doubled down the left field line with one out and scored on Britney Butler's home run.   Then Courtney Wilhelms homered to give the Coyotes the 8-7 lead. 

 

In the Gators' seventh, the first two batters were retired and Kelsey Wood (San Jose, California, Lynbrook) then hit a pinch-hit single to left center but was left stranded as Prentice (3-1) got the final Gator to pop up. 

 

Vanessa Truan (San Jose, California, Leland)(1-2) recorded the loss for SF State, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up 10 hits and 8 runs (five earned) while striking out one and walking five.  Prentice picked up the win in relief, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and walking one.   

 

Delgado finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Herrada and Jensen each had two hits apiece.  Four Coyotes had two hits apiece to lead the way for Cal State San Bernardino.

 

The two teams will conclude their four-game weekend series tomorrow morning beginning at 11am with another doubleheader.
